Josko Gvardiol Signs New Five-Year Contract at Man City

Josko Gvardiol has committed his long-term future to Manchester City by signing a five-year contract extension that runs until 2031, following strong transfer interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich earlier in the summer.

Manchester City secured a major piece of their defensive foundation on Tuesday as Josko Gvardiol put pen to paper on a new five-year contract. The fresh terms tie the Croatia international to the Etihad Stadium through the summer of 2031, with the option of an additional 12 months. His previous agreement still had two years left to run, but the club moved to reward the defender after three stellar seasons in English football.

The 24-year-old defender has made 122 appearances since arriving from RB Leipzig for £77 million ($102 million) in 2023. Capable of slotting in seamlessly at both center-back and left-back, he earned a Premier League winner’s medal in 2024. Despite missing the majority of the second half of last season after suffering a broken leg in January, Gvardiol worked his way back to full fitness to feature in Croatia’s World Cup campaign.

Bidding Farewell to Transfer Speculation

European heavyweights Real Madrid and Bayern Munich circled earlier in the summer as speculation mounted over the defender’s next career move. Gvardiol noted that the decision to stay put was instantaneous.

“As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted. It’s been three years, and we’ve achieved a lot of things here together. Also, the new manager is here. I felt that this is the right club for me and my family as well.”
