Liverpool Surrender Two-Goal Lead to Lose 3-2 Against Monaco at Anfield

Liverpool suffered a 3-2 defeat against Monaco at Anfield after surrendering a two-goal advantage in Skysports‘s first home game in charge as head coach, according to The New York Times. The Reds raced into an early lead during the pre-season friendly, but familiar defensive struggles and fading fitness levels allowed the French Ligue 1 side to mount a second-half comeback.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 16th minute after receiving a pass from Ryan Gravenberch, who had played a one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai. Florian Wirtz doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 29th minute, poking in from two yards out following a goalmouth scramble after Cody Gakpo headed a cross back into the six-yard box.

Monaco reduced the deficit just before half-time when Aleksandr Golovin was brought down in the box by Virgil van Dijk and converted the resulting 44th-minute penalty past goalkeeper Alisson. Mika Biereth equalised for Monaco 11 minutes after the restart, slotting home at the second attempt after his initial shot was saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili. The turnaround was completed in the 88th minute when Paris Brunner headed in a near-post corner to secure a 3-2 victory.

Fitness Concerns and Second-Half Drop-Offs Highlight Pre-Season

The defeat mirrored Liverpool’s previous pre-season outing in Chicago against Leeds, where they also squandered a two-goal lead before losing 4-2. Head coach Iraola was blunt in his post-match assessment regarding his squad’s physical conditioning.

We played a good first half but we don’t have much more in terms of the level required to play like this, Iraola told LFCTV, as reported by sports.yahoo.com. And then they were much better in the second half.

Iraola explained that while many senior players are in a good place, they currently lack the energy reserves required to sustain high-intensity pressing for a full 90 minutes. The match marked the return of several World Cup participants, including Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, and Cody Gakpo, who featured in the starting XI for the first time since the tournament.

Squad Rotation, Debutants, and Injury Updates

The friendly allowed Iraola to heavily rotate his squad, making 11 changes in the second half. Summer signing Victor Munoz made his first appearance for Liverpool after coming on as a substitute just before the hour mark, receiving a warm reception from the Anfield crowd after cutting short his post-World Cup holiday with Spain.

The matchday squad also featured younger players in the starting line-up, including 20-year-old Lewis Koumas and 18-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

Ahead of the Premier League season opener against Newcastle United, Iraola provided updates on squad fitness and upcoming fixtures:

  • Curtis Jones: Missed the Monaco fixture as a precaution following a hip issue picked up in training on Saturday, though the problem is not considered serious.
  • Jeremy Jacquet: Sidelined with lingering effects from a February shoulder injury and a minor knee problem, but expected to feature in next week’s friendly against Como.
  • Upcoming Schedule: Liverpool conclude their pre-season preparations with a double-header against Como at Anfield.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Iraola chose not to risk Jones with the competitive top-flight campaign less than a fortnight away.
