Metro Cebu Air Quality Shifts to Very Unhealthy as AQI Drops to 197

Metro Cebu’s air quality slightly improved Friday morning, moving from Acutely Unhealthy down to “Very Unhealthy” as the Environmental Management Bureau Region VII recorded an Air Quality Index of 197 at 11 a.m. on September 4, down from 202 earlier that morning.

Talisay City Monitoring Station Records Slight Drop

According to the Environmental Management Bureau Region VII (EMB-7), air quality conditions shifted slightly on Friday morning, September 4. The monitoring station located in Talisay City, Cebu, registered an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 197 at 11 a.m., marking a decline from the 202 reading recorded at 7 a.m.

This shift places Metro Cebu back into the Very Unhealthy category. Under Department of Environment and Natural Resources Administrative Order 2020-14, this specific classification covers AQI scores ranging from 151 to 200. While the morning numbers reflect a retreat from the Acutely Unhealthy range, the regional environment office emphasized that the environment has not yet crossed into a lower-risk category.

Precautions Remain Mandatory for Vulnerable Residents

Environmental regulators warned that the dip from 202 to 197 should not encourage residents to drop their guard. Under official DENR guidelines governing Very Unhealthy air quality conditions, individuals diagnosed with existing heart or respiratory conditions must stay indoors and rest as much as possible.

Beyond vulnerable groups, authorities urged all residents to postpone unnecessary trips and voluntarily restrict vehicle usage across Metro Cebu. Furthermore, EMB-7 continued to encourage the public to wear masks—specifically N95 masks— to minimize personal exposure to airborne pollutants still lingering in the atmosphere.

Conditions Shift in Toledo City

A more substantial environmental improvement was documented outside Metro Cebu at the EMB-7 monitoring station situated in Barangay Cabitoonan, Toledo City. At 7 a.m., Toledo City recorded an AQI of 113, which was officially classified as Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

By 11 a.m., conditions in Toledo City improved further as the AQI dropped to 79. That later reading shifted the local air status into the Fair category, demonstrating a stark contrast to the persistent severe pollution levels recorded in Metro Cebu.

Ongoing Regional Monitoring by EMB-7

Environmental authorities are maintaining active oversight across the region. EMB-7 confirmed it continues to monitor local ambient air quality to assess the presence, extent, and potential health impacts associated with reported haze across the area.
