The newly launched UN System Data Commons breaks down those institutional barriers by bringing together publicly available data from 26 distinct UN system entities into one centralized platform available at data.un.org.
Rather than replacing the existing platforms managed by individual agencies, the portal connects them through a shared gateway that respects their respective terms of use. The system allows users to search nearly 44 million data points, explore long-term trends, compare indicators across different countries and topics, and trace specific figures directly back to their original institutional sources.

Speaking to officials in New York on Thursday, the UN Secretary-General framed the launch as an urgent necessity for the digital age, warning that the proliferation of modern technology has created a paradox where information is abundant but certainty is scarce.
