Blake Willey Scores as Republic FC Beats FC Tulsa

Sacramento Republic FC is advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals after grinding out a tense, physical 1–0 victory over FC Tulsa on Saturday night at Heart Health Park. In a match defined by missed chances and defensive resilience, 19-year-old homegrown midfielder Blake Willey delivered the decisive moment in the 88th minute to keep the club’s postseason run alive.

The Indomitable Club survived a bruising 90 minutes where fouls mounted and attacking windows closed fast. Sacramento built its second-half pressure meticulously, culminating in Willey’s late strike that broke a scoreless deadlock and secured a clean sheet for goalkeeper Danny Vitiello.

Building Pressure and Near Misses

Sacramento found its initial rhythm in the 56th minute. Mayele Malango intercepted a loose Tulsa cross and pushed the ball forward to Pep Casas, who shifted it to Mark-Anthony Kaye. Kaye drove a low shot toward the net, forcing Tulsa goalkeeper Dane Jacomen into his first save of the night.

Minutes later, Kaye nearly broke the game open with an acrobatic bicycle kick. Jack Gurr delivered a free kick into the penalty area, Lee Desmond headed it into the mix, and Kaye rose above the defense to test Jacomen with an all-out diving stop. The pressure intensified in the 72nd minute when Casas switched a long ball to Malango, who beat his defender down the endline. Malango cut a pass back to Casas for a one-touch shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, but the curling effort rattled off the crossbar.

Willey’s Late Breakthrough

The breakthrough finally arrived in the dying moments of regulation. Casas curled another dangerous cross into the box, which a Tulsa defender headed away—straight into the path of Willey at the top of the penalty area. The young midfielder kept his composure as the ball bounced toward him, connecting cleanly on a one-touch strike that found the back of the net.

After taking the lead, Sacramento dropped into a compact defensive shape to weather Tulsa’s final pushes. Vitiello and the backline held firm to preserve the shutout, marking the fifth postseason clean sheet of Vitiello’s career.

By securing the second seed, the Indomitable Club maintains home-field advantage for the remainder of the Western Conference rounds. Sacramento Republic FC will host third-seeded El Paso Locomotive FC on Saturday, November 7, at 7:00 p.m., with tickets currently available to the public.
