Budzinski, Bost, Miller Win Metro East Congressional Races

Incumbents Hold Firm in Illinois Congressional Races

The balance of political power across Illinois’ Metro East region remains largely unchanged after Tuesday’s general election. All three congressional incumbents representing portions of the area—U.S. Reps. Nikki Budzinski, Mike Bost, and Mary Miller—secured reelection, soundly defeating their respective challengers, according to reporting by STLPR.

Budzinski Retains 13th District Seat

U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski, a Democrat from Springfield, successfully fended off a challenge from former Champaign County Board member Jeff Wilson to secure a third term. The Associated Press called the race for Budzinski, whose district spans from East St. Louis to Champaign-Urbana.

Though the 13th District has historically been viewed as a competitive swing territory, Budzinski has maintained a consistent hold on the seat throughout her three terms. Following her victory, Budzinski framed the result as a broader signal of voter sentiment regarding federal economic direction.

“Tonight was honestly a very clear repudiation of these Trump economic policies and the failed Republican leadership in Congress,” Budzinski stated. “I’m just so thrilled to be going back to Washington to get this back on track.”

Mike Bost Claims Seventh Term in 12th District

In the 12th District, Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bost of Murphysboro claimed a seventh term after defeating O’Fallon resident Julie Fortier. The Associated Press officially called the race for Bost, who emphasized his deep roots in the region during his victory comments.

“Southern Illinois is my home, and there is no greater honor than representing the people and communities that shaped my life,” Bost said. “I’m incredibly grateful to the voters of Illinois’ 12th District who have once again placed their trust in me. I never have and never will take my responsibility to them for granted.”

Meanwhile, Republican U.S. Rep. Mary Miller of Hindsboro secured her fourth term by defeating Edwardsville resident Jennifer Todd. Miller’s district, characterized by its horseshoe shape that geographically surrounds the 13th District, remained firmly in her column as the Associated Press confirmed her win.

The Stakes of Continued Incumbency

For the voters of the Metro East, these results mean the reelection of their congressional incumbents. For Bost, Miller, and Budzinski, these victories mean returning to their respective caucuses in Washington.
