Dane Hartmann climbs to sixth place at the DWU Open
The University of Jamestown men’s wrestling team displayed significant resilience on the mats this past Saturday during the DWU Open, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University. While the tournament presented a challenging field of regional competitors, individual standout performances from Dane Hartmann and Isaac Chavarria provided the primary highlights for the Jimmies’ campaign in Mitchell, S.D.
After an initial setback in the opening round against Augustana's Lane Knutson, Hartmann utilized the consolation bracket to rebuild his momentum. He secured two consecutive first-period pins, defeating teammate Alik Sigrah in 1:30 and Dakota Wesleyan's Brody Brandt in 2:16.
Hartmann’s progression continued through a series of high-stakes matches, including a narrow 11-10 decision over Fort Hays State’s Jonathan Rigler and a 10-4 decision against UMary’s Ty Wiedrich. Although his run concluded in the consolation semifinals following a match against Northern State’s Tanner Meyers, his four-match winning streak served as a cornerstone for the team’s performance throughout the day.
Chavarria finds rhythm in consolation rounds
At 149 pounds, Isaac Chavarria also delivered a productive outing, finishing with a 4-2 record. Chavarria’s tournament began with a gritty 13-10 sudden-victory decision against Chadron State’s Caleb Nadig. Following a third-round loss to Bismarck State’s Hudson Egeberg, Chavarria pivoted to a dominant stretch in the consolation brackets.
During this stretch, Chavarria recorded a 24-7 technical fall against Sioux Falls’ Sonny Lora in 6:26, followed by a 7-1 decision over Augustana’s Graham Wilde. He closed his winning streak with a 10-9 edge over Minot State’s Brayden Guerrero before eventually bowing out to Northern State’s Calder Sheehan.
The Jimmies also saw individual success in other weight classes, including:
- Jonny Ramos (165 lbs): Secured a 10-8 decision over Sioux Falls’ Fuhad Salau in the opening championship round.
- Niko Sigrah (197 lbs): Earned a victory by fall against Bismarck State’s Greg Fuher in 1:56 during the consolation bracket.
Other members of the Jamestown squad who gained valuable mat time against the regional field included Drake Sparklin (125), Zairyn Ramos-Semana (125), Harley Hardison (133), Owyn Schreder (157), Alik Sigrah (197), and Austin Celzo (285).
The University of Jamestown wrestling team will look to build on this momentum when they travel to West Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the Grand View Open on Saturday, November 14.
