Flagstaff’s home course at Buffalo Park offered no altitude favors to outsiders on Friday, but it suited Northern Arizona University’s cross country roster with clinical precision. Hayley Burns clocked a personal-best 15:55.0 in the women’s 5K at the Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships, securing second place behind teammate Ava Mitchell.
Mitchell claimed the individual conference title in 15:35.1, also a personal best, leading a staggering Lumberjacks sweep at the front. Northern Arizona captured the women’s team title with 16 points. The scoring five swept 1-2-3-4-6 through Mitchell, Burns, Addy Ritzenhein at 15:58.4, Emma Stutzman at 15:59.7, and Payton Godsey at 16:14.7.
The Depth Behind the Sweep
The host team’s dominance extended far beyond the front line. NAU packed seven runners inside the top eight finishers, adding Makenzie McRae in seventh and Jordan Banta in eighth as non-scorers. That depth pushed the Lumberjacks to their eighth Big Sky women’s team title, executed in front of a partisan home crowd.
For Burns, Friday’s performance represented a tangible step forward. Entering the meet as the defending individual champion after winning last year’s conference race in 16:05.8, she bettered that winning mark by more than ten seconds—even while finishing runner-up to her teammate.
What Comes Next on the Road to Terre Haute
The conference meet marks the close of the early-season local battles, but the schedule shifts quickly toward the national stage. NAU advances directly to the NCAA regional championships in November, serving as the qualifying gateway to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The regional rounds will test whether the Lumberjacks can translate their Buffalo Park depth against larger, sea-level and varied-terrain fields.
