A Sunrise Proposal on Tomaree Summit
“We were up there, at the top, watching the sunrise, when Shane got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring he got in Keanes,” Mairead Sheehan said, recounting the moment her engagement transformed from a Gold Coast hike into a lifelong commitment. The couple, Mairead from Cahirkeem, Eyeries, Beara, Co Cork, and Shane from Keel, Boolteens, Co Kerry, were traveling through Australia in a campervan when the proposal occurred on the 161m summit of Tomaree in Port Stephens, Irish Examiner reported.
The romantic milestone serves as a high-altitude prelude to a wedding that mirrored the warmth of their Australian travels. After the engagement, the couple returned to Ireland to marry in July of this year, braving a heatwave that provided a bright backdrop to their ceremony at St Kentigern’s Church in Eyeries. For Mairead, the choice of venue held deep personal significance, as Fr Eamonn Mulvihill had also served as the priest for her first Holy Communion and confirmation.
From Killarney Nightclubs to Coastal Celebrations
The timeline of their relationship traces back to March 2018, a period marked by the festive energy of St Patrick’s Night celebrations in Killarney. The pair first crossed paths in Social 15, where an immediate connection sparked on the dance floor. “We were introduced in Social 15 and instantly clicked as we danced the night away and the rest is history,” Mairead noted.
The wedding festivities centered around the Killarney Oaks Hotel in Co Kerry, where the reception celebrated the union of the Sheehan and Prendiville families. The event saw a gathering of close relatives, including Mairead’s parents, Margaret and Martin Sheehan, and Shane’s parents, Eileen and Pierce Prendiville. The wedding party was rounded out by a dedicated group of friends and family, including maid of honour Orla O’Shea, bridesmaids Catriona Kingston and Ciara Connolly, and best man Stephen Cahillane.
Even the family’s pets played a role in the day’s narrative. Bruno, a four-year-old cocker spaniel mix, and the family’s Jack Russell, Coco, were part of the morning’s proceedings, adding a domestic warmth to the formal occasion.
Elegant Aesthetics and Musical Momentum
The visual and auditory elements of the wedding reflected a sophisticated approach to contemporary Irish nuptials. Mairead opted for an elegant Alexandra Grecco design, a satin halterneck with a low back purchased from The White & Gold bridal boutique in Kinsale. Shane complemented the aesthetic in black-tie attire sourced from Tuxedo in Tralee. The grooming was handled by makeup artist Andrea Moore and hairstylist Debbie Crowley.

The atmosphere of the reception was driven by a curated selection of live performances. Singer Lily MacMonagle provided music during the ceremony, while Nicole Longergan delivered an electric violin performance during the drinks reception. The transition into the ballroom was marked by a high-energy entrance accompanied by Longergan’s music, which Mairead described as “insane” due to the crowd’s reaction.

The evening’s entertainment concluded with the wedding band Flog The Dog, who maintained the momentum on the dancefloor. The celebratory details were completed by floral arrangements from Peter Tora of Scent of Tora and a wedding cake by O’Carroll’s Cakes in Killarney. Following the celebrations, the newlyweds embarked on a minimoon in Corfu before traveling to Thailand and the Maldives for their official honeymoon.
