Man Arrested After Shooting at Santa Fe VFW Post Following Dispute

Carlos Joaquin Behrend Ramirez arrested after shooting at Santa Fe VFW Post

A 44-year-old man is facing felony charges after a dispute at a Santa Fe veterans’ organization escalated into gunfire late Thursday night. Carlos Joaquin Behrend Ramirez was taken into custody by Santa Fe police following reports that he fired a weapon at VFW Post #2951, according to a report from KOB 4.

The incident unfolded near the intersection of Sandoval Street and Montezuma Avenue around 11:56 p.m. on Nov. 6. Law enforcement officials stated they received multiple ShotSpotter alerts in the area, which coincided with calls to the Santa Fe Regional Emergency Communication Center reporting a man firing a gun at the VFW located at 307 Montezuma Avenue.

While the exchange of gunfire created a high-stakes environment for those inside the building, no injuries were reported by witnesses or responding officers. The chaos, which began over seemingly minor social friction, highlights the volatile nature of localized disputes when they transition from verbal arguments to armed confrontation.

A dispute over a pool game leads to gunfire

The sequence of events suggests a rapid escalation from a social disagreement to a criminal act. Police reports indicate that Ramirez became upset following a dispute involving a pool game and a disagreement over a song being played at the post. After the argument, Ramirez left the premises, but he returned a short time later armed with a firearm.

When Ramirez was denied reentry into the building, he allegedly fired into the VFW. The situation intensified when another individual at the scene drew a gun and fired at Ramirez, causing him to flee the area. Officers located Ramirez in a rear alley during their initial response and apprehended him without further incident.

The investigation has since moved beyond the immediate scene to Ramirez’s private residence. Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit obtained a search warrant for his home, where investigators reportedly seized a firearm and spent shell casings. These items are expected to serve as critical evidence in determining the exact mechanics of the shootout.

Legal charges and the ongoing investigation

Ramirez has been booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center. He faces two significant felony counts:

  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • Shooting at an occupied dwelling

Despite the arrests and the recovery of physical evidence, several questions remain unanswered. The Santa Fe police department noted that the discharge of both guns—the weapon fired by Ramirez and the weapon fired by the individual who responded to him—remains under active investigation. Authorities have not yet clarified the identity of the second shooter or whether that individual faces any legal scrutiny.

The investigation continues as detectives process the evidence found at both the VFW Post and the suspect’s home. Police stated they will release further details as they become available to the public.
