Master of Landscape Architecture Program at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Updates Master of Landscape Architecture Requirements for 2026

The Virginia Tech College of Architecture, Arts, and Design has finalized the admissions criteria and curriculum structure for its Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program, according to the university’s official academic catalog. The program, which is fully accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board and carries a STEM designation, requires a minimum of 50 credit hours for degree completion.

Applicants looking to join the Blacksburg-based program for the upcoming fall term must submit their materials by the January 15 deadline. The university requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 and has made the GRE optional for prospective students. International applicants must meet a minimum TOEFL IBT score of 4.5 across all sub-scores, or provide an IELTS score of 6.5.

Three Distinct Pathways for Enrollment

The program is designed to accommodate students with varying levels of design experience through three specific academic tracks. The primary path is a three-year program intended for students who hold an undergraduate degree in a field outside of design. These students are required to complete a minimum of 50 credit hours, which includes up to 28 hours of qualifying coursework.

For those who already possess an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture or an allied discipline, the university offers a two-year Advanced Standing track. This path recognizes prior coursework to accelerate progress toward the degree while maintaining the 50-credit hour requirement. Seasoned professionals who hold an accredited landscape architecture degree may apply for the Post-Professional track, a one-year program plus a thesis that requires a minimum of 25 credit hours.

Portfolio and Application Expectations

Admission to the program is competitive and requires more than just academic transcripts. Prospective students must submit a personally authored portfolio or exhibit, provided as an 8-page PDF at a minimum of 250 dpi, to demonstrate creative aptitude. Additionally, applicants must provide a Statement of Academic and Professional Goals, limited to 1,000 words. This statement must detail the applicant’s background, motivation for choosing Virginia Tech, and any potential areas of specialization. Three letters of recommendation are also mandatory for a complete application.

Curriculum and Research Focus

The curriculum focuses on the intersection of natural sciences, community collaboration, and design-thinking. Students are required to complete 41 credit hours of graded graduate-level courses and a minimum of 9 hours dedicated to research, culminating in a thesis. Core coursework includes:

  • LAR 5124: Graduate Landscape Architecture Resilient Site Design
  • LAR 5014G: Site Design and Construction Documents
  • LAR 5084G: Adv. Landscape Architecture Site Planning and Design
  • LAR 5254: Landscape Architecture Theories
  • LAR 5724: Scholarship in Landscape Architecture
  • LAR 5334: Landscape Architecture History

Students may also choose to pursue a simultaneous master’s degree in Natural Resources or Urban and Regional Planning. Those seeking further information or guidance on the application process are directed to contact Graduate Program Director Prof. Terry Clements or Graduate Coordinator Wendy Vaughn. Detailed policy information is available in the Graduate Student Handbook maintained by the university.
