Matilda The Musical celebrates 15 years in London’s West End

Matilda The Musical is celebrating 15 years in London’s West End. The production has drawn more than 12 million global theatergoers, staged upwards of 10,000 performances, and reached over 100 cities since premiering at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010.

What began as a holiday staging in Stratford-upon-Avon has transformed into a global theatrical powerhouse. Composer and lyricist Tim Minchin and writer Dennis Kelly admitted they never anticipated the enduring international footprint the show would establish.

Stratford Origins and the First Preview

The production originally premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010 before moving to the West End the following year. Long before ticket sales surged, the creative team had modest expectations.

Minchin noted that the true scale of the project only registered when they observed an early run-through.

We saw it on stage at the first preview in Stratford and we thought, ‘Ah, hold on a minute’. We thought at that point that we might have a real crack at getting to the West End – but the bonus 15 and a half years. It’s mad.

Global Milestones and Awards

Based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, the musical has earned a permanent place in theater history. It currently stands as the 10th longest-running musical in West End history.

  • Staged more than 10,000 performances
  • Played in more than 100 cities worldwide
  • Seen by over 12 million people globally
  • Accumulated more than 100 international awards, featuring 25 wins for best musical

Jacqui O’Hanlon, deputy executive director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, noted the sharp contrast between the initial ticket discounting and later demand. Early previews featured price breaks to fill empty seats, while later ticket sales saw secondary market prices soar to hundreds of pounds on eBay.

Enduring Themes and Current Touring Plans

Minchin attributes the show’s lasting appeal to its direct, unapologetic moral core. He noted that the production’s message encourages young audiences to stand up for justice, value reading as a form of freedom, recognize that love conquers all, and understand that little girls are powerful.

It says to kids, stand up for what’s right. Be brave, reading and stories are freedom, your family is where you find it, love conquers all, little girls are powerful. It’s hard to feel cynical about it.

The production continues its steady momentum across multiple stages. While the London engagement maintains tickets on sale until January 2027, a touring company is actively touring across the UK and Ireland.
