Miami Hurricanes Claim No. 1 Spot in Initial CFP Rankings

“This has been such a crazy football season filled with unbelievable parity through the first eight weeks,” CFP committee chair Hunter Yurachek said. The unbeaten Miami Hurricanes sit atop the initial College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night, holding the top position by most metrics, while 2-loss Alabama slotted in at No. 5, ESPN Sioux Falls reported.

The rankings, which will shape the 12-team bracket and seedings, place Georgia at No. 2, Utah at No. 3, and Indiana at No. 4. Those top four teams would receive first-round byes if the initial order held for the 12-team bracket. Kentucky, Texas, UCLA, BYU, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, and Ohio State round out the top 12, with Tennessee at No. 13 and Boise State checking in at No. 25.

Boise State Earns Group of 6 Spot in Projected Bracket

Because five conference champions are guaranteed spots in the 12-team field, No. 25 Boise State, the lone Group of 6 representative in the top 25, would replace Ohio State as the 12th seed. That positioning sets up a first round featuring Boise State traveling to face Alabama, BYU visiting UCLA, Notre Dame hosting Kentucky, and Ole Miss playing at Texas.

The committee emphasized that significant movement remains likely. “There’s a number of football games still left to be played,” Yurachek said. “You just look at the matchups coming this weekend. We still believe, as a committee, there’s going to be a significant amount of movement within the entire top-25 ranking, and we’re looking forward to the task at hand, and it will be a difficult task.”

Notre Dame Faces Must-Win Scenario Against Miami

The Fighting Irish find themselves in a precarious position at No. 11 despite a strong season. Notre Dame hosts Miami on Saturday in a game that could determine whether the Irish reach the playoff. The Irish defeated Miami 27-24 in the 2025 opener, but the committee has not placed them ahead of the Hurricanes since that game.

Notre Dame currently lacks a victory against any team in the committee’s top 25, and none of its final three opponents after Miami appears in the current rankings. The Irish are guaranteed a playoff berth only by finishing in the top 12 of the final rankings. “Notre Dame, the committee is impressed on both sides of the ball,” Yurachek said. “They are a very good football team.”

SEC Dominance Reflected in Conference Breakdown

The Southeastern Conference flexed its muscles with five teams in the top 12, followed by the Big Ten with three, the Big 12 with two, and the ACC with two. Boise State stands alone as the only Group of 6 program in the top 25. The remaining top 25 includes Tennessee, LSU, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Houston, Missouri, Iowa, USC, South Carolina, Arizona, Oregon, Florida and Boise State.

Miami’s Rapid Rise from Last Season’s Bubble Team

Miami’s ascension to No. 1 marks a dramatic reversal from last season, when the Hurricanes were not included in the committee’s top 10 until the final rankings. That late surge secured a 12-team bracket spot and knocked Notre Dame out of the playoff field. Miami then won three straight CFP games before falling to Indiana 27-21 in the National Championship presented by AT&T.

Now the Hurricanes stand as the team to beat, with the chance to avenge that championship loss to Indiana, who is No. 4 and would receive a first-round bye.

“But when you look at Notre Dame’s schedule and the wins that they have versus the teams that are ahead of them, they don’t have that signature win right now,” Yurachek said.
