Every athlete on New York Tech’s first Sprint Football team must weigh in at 183 pounds or less, a hard limit the school is enforcing as it recruits student-athletes for the Collegiate Sprint Football League, New York Tech reported. The weight cap is the defining feature of sprint football, which otherwise follows traditional NCAA football rules.
The 183-Pound Cap and a Field Ready for Play
The recruiting push comes as New York Tech’s football field stands striped and ready for play. Sprint football’s lighter, faster format is designed for athletes who might not fit the build of a traditional football roster, and the league gives smaller-framed players a dedicated competitive lane.
University Teams Join Regional Leagues
Beyond the gridiron, the university’s athletics and recreation offerings span club competition, intramurals, and open recreation across its Long Island campus and New York City. The men’s and women’s club basketball teams compete in the National Club Basketball Association, while the men’s and women’s club volleyball squads play in the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association. A co-ed badminton team faces local Long Island colleges in the Long Island Collegiate Badminton League.
Intramurals Open Anytime Through CampusGroups
Students who want to play without joining a league can join intramural teams at any time, as individuals or with a group. Current co-ed intramural offerings include basketball, flag football, soccer, tennis, and volleyball, with the university continuing to add more sports and activities. Sign-ups run through CampusGroups.
City Outings, Citibike Passes and the Fitness Center
Off campus, the university organizes outings to city parks and fields along with hiking, skating, and rock climbing, and students can access Citibike passes and rent equipment. The bright fitness center at the Long Island campus is open to students, faculty, and staff before, after, or between classes. Students interested in joining an existing team or starting a new one can contact the athletics and recreation office directly.

The sprint football weight limit is the sharpest number on campus right now: 183 pounds, enforced on every athlete who takes the field.
