Providence Edges Hough 3-2 in N.C. Class 8A Soccer Playoffs

Providence Knocks Out Hough in 3-2 Playoff Thriller

Top-seeded Providence survived a fierce second-half challenge from Hough on Thursday night, capturing a 3-2 victory in the N.C. Class 8A soccer second round thanks to a game-winning goal by sophomore Aiden Watkins with 11 and a half minutes remaining on the clock, HighSchoolOT reported.

The win gives Providence a measure of revenge after Hough eliminated them in the second round of the postseason last year. This time around, the Panthers capitalized on a fast start and a late surge to improve to 19-3-1 overall, advancing to host longtime rival Ardrey Kell in the Western 8A semifinals on Monday.

For Providence coach Tyler Gibson, the performance reflected a noticeable shift in intensity. Coming off a bye week that traditionally leaves teams looking a bit sluggish, the Panthers approached Thursday’s match with strict concentration as the No. 1 seed in the Western 8A bracket. It marks the program’s first top seed since 2000, the same year Providence claimed its third and final state title.

“When we get ready in the locker room, we’re usually playing around,” Gibson said. “Today, there wasn’t any playing around. They were focused and locked in and they’ve had a ton of time to talk about how being the No. 1 seed and that target that’s on our backs.”

A Game of Momentum Swings

Thursday’s matchup lived up to the programs’ history of volatile postseason games. Providence broke a scoreless tie with 3 minutes and 30 seconds left in the first half when Watkins assisted A.J. Davila for a shot 10 yards out. The Panthers doubled their lead 11 and a half minutes into the second half when Watkins found Owen Bratcher just seconds after a long blast from Thomas Pippett IV hit the right post.

Hough, which finished its season 13-9-4, refused to fold. Calen Smith narrowed the gap to 2-1 with 21 minutes remaining off an assist from Jose Ramos. Moments later, with 12:56 left to play, Lukas Patrignani tied the score at 2-2 by converting an assist from Ignacio Guzman’s direct kick.

“When we were down 2-0, I told our boys, ‘Hey, let’s keep battling because we’ve seen it happen,'” Hough coach Mike Kutcher said. “We just had to believe. We just battle and grind. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The deadlock lasted less than two minutes. Pippett delivered a throw-in assist to Watkins, whose game-winner secured the 3-2 edge with 11:38 left on the clock.

Both programs carry deep postseason pedigrees into November. Providence has reached the state playoffs every year since opening in 1989, capturing state titles in 1992, 1995, and 2000. Hough has made the postseason every year since opening in 2010, finishing as the state runner-up in 2017.
