Sam Fox departs Fox Restaurant Concepts after nearly three decades
Sam Fox, the founder of the Phoenix-based Fox Restaurant Concepts, officially left the company on October 30, according to a report from KTAR.com. The departure marks the end of a nearly 30-year tenure that saw the local hospitality brand expand into a massive national operation. Fox, who built the company from its early stages into an empire of 22 different brands, is shifting his professional focus toward his other venture, Author & Edit Hospitality.
This transition comes several years after a landmark deal in which Fox Restaurant Concepts was sold to The Cheesecake Factory for more than $350 million. While the acquisition was a significant milestone for the Phoenix business community, Fox remained with the organization long after the transaction was finalized. He noted in an interview with the Business Journal that he had anticipated his eventual departure following the sale, but the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic led him to stay longer than originally planned.
The scale of the organization Fox built is substantial. At its peak, Fox Restaurant Concepts managed 170 restaurants across the country and employed a workforce of more than 9,000 people. His exit leaves a significant leadership legacy at a time when the company is transitioning into its next phase under corporate ownership.
Focus shifts to Author & Edit Hospitality
The move allows Fox to reclaim full control over his independent projects. Through Author & Edit Hospitality, he has been managing the development and operation of the Global Ambassador hotel in Phoenix. This shift represents a move toward assets where he maintains total ownership, a priority he expressed clearly regarding his future direction.
“It’s time for me to focus on things that I own 100% of and work on some growth of the hotels and maybe a few restaurants,” Fox said.
While Fox is stepping away from the day-to-day leadership of the 170-restaurant group, he remains optimistic about the stability of the brands he helped create. He indicated that the current leadership team at Fox Restaurants is prepared to manage the brands independently, suggesting that the infrastructure he established is robust enough to function without his direct oversight.

“I think there’s a really bright future for what’s happening at Fox Restaurants, but also at Cheesecake and all the brands that they’re going to own and control,” Fox said.
The departure of a founder often signals a period of cultural or operational shifts within a large corporation, particularly when a local success story is integrated into a larger, publicly traded entity like The Cheesecake Factory. However, Fox’s decision to stay through the pandemic suggests a commitment to stabilizing the workforce and the brand’s footprint before handing over the reins to the next generation of management.
