Apple TV’s Ted Lasso
concluded its fourth season on October 7, 2026, with major coaching shifts at AFC Richmond, the unexpected resolution of a corporate takeover, and revelations about Ted’s family history as fans await news of a potential fifth season.
Alice Chilton Takes Over as Head Coach While Ted Lasso Steps Down
The season four finale, titled Being Alive
and streaming on Apple TV, delivers substantial shakeups for the Lady Greyhounds. Alice Chilton, played by Tanya Reynolds, steps into the head coach role after an arc that forms the emotional anchor of the season. In an effort to be more present for his son Henry, Ted Lasso asks to step down, requesting a demotion to assistant manager.
Co-creator and star Brendan Hunt explained that keeping Ted at Richmond in a secondary role honors the integrity of women’s football. If we had had Ted just go straight back to the men’s team, it would have made this whole season be like a favor to women’s football — to just come in for a moment as a tourist and then be on our way,
Hunt told TVLine.
The 56-minute episode brought back familiar faces for a final gathering of the Diamond Dogs, featuring appearances from Sam Obisanya and Nathan Shelley.
Roy Kent Leaves Richmond for Chelsea While Rebecca Blocks Zelda
Across town, Roy Kent accepts an offer to manage Chelsea. Rebecca Welton expresses deep concern over the massive pressure of the new position, telling him he is taking an enormous risk.

With assistance from Leslie Higgins, majority club owner Rebecca is able to foil a plan by Zelda to secretly gain a majority stake of Richmond. The decisive tiebreaker arrives from beyond the grave: Crown & Anchor pub owner Mae Green, played by Annette Badland, passed away unexpectedly in the penultimate episode after delivering a monumental pregame speech. With Mae’s final contribution, Rebecca remains safely in control.
Grief and Personal Revelations Shape the Finale
The finale grapples heavily with grief following the death of Mae, whose memorial service features musical tributes and brings the community together. Ted, played by series creator Jason Sudeikis, initially lies to protect him by claiming his father suffered a fatal head injury from a fall down steps, before opening up and revealing the truth.
On the romantic front, Rebecca undergoes a major change of her own. Reflecting on her past marriage to the late Rupert Mannion, she casts aside her resistance to marriage and proposes to Matthijs right in her office. Matthijs accepts, dropping to one knee to seal an engagement that sets up entirely new domestic dynamics for the club owner.
Creators Address the Prospects of a Fifth Season
As the credits roll on season four, Apple TV has not officially confirmed a fifth season renewal. Brendan Hunt noted that no writers room has been greenlit yet, emphasizing that production on any continuation would only begin after an official green light from the platform following the conclusion of production on Season 4 ahead of the death of Anthony Head.

Where did you hear that? I have my sources. Well, then that’s news to me. I certainly hope it happens, and I’m optimistic, but yeah, haven’t heard anything official yet.
The finale also featured cameo appearances from former men’s team regulars, which Hunt described as a planned passing of the torch moment from the men to the women.
