Turek, Sand Win Iowa Senate and Governor in Democratic Uprising

On election night in Des Moines, Democrat Joshua Turek declared Iowa the “center of the political universe” after winning a U.S. Senate seat in a state Donald Trump carried by 13 points just two years earlier, capping a Democratic wave that also delivered the governor’s mansion to Rob Sand and three of the state’s four congressional seats to the party, The Nation reported.

The victories marked a dramatic reversal for a state long considered a Republican firewall. Iowa had earned the nickname “Florida of the North” for its GOP-dominated legislature and regressive governing agenda, and millions in super PAC money had flooded the state in a last-ditch effort to preserve the GOP Senate majority. Yet Turek, a state lawmaker running against GOP Representative Ashley Hinson, prevailed anyway, telling supporters at the Iowa Historical Building and Museum that “tonight, Iowa, we outvoted the billionaires.”

A Governor-Elect Who Sang “America the Beautiful”

Sand, the incumbent state auditor, captured the statehouse for Democrats for the first time since 2010. His victory speech struck a deliberately nonpartisan tone in a state where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by 180,000. Leading the crowd in “America the Beautiful,” Sand told Iowans, “We don’t tell them to be red or to be blue. We tell them to be good, to be kind, to tell the truth.” His campaign slogan—”Not redder and bluer, but better and truer”—reflected a strategy of appealing to “reasonably minded people in the other party,” as he put it, acknowledging that governing with GOP legislative majorities would require seeking “workable common ground.”

Sand also extended an olive branch to his opponents, saying, “I hope you will kindly tell me why you didn’t vote for me—and since I’ll be here for a while, you’ll get to know me better, and maybe change your mind next time.”

Turek Ties Disability to Political Legacy

Turek, who is wheelchair-bound due to spina bifida contracted after his father was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam, channeled the state’s populist tradition during his victory speech. He brought former Senator Tom Harkin to the podium, crediting Harkin with changing his life by securing passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Turek described Harkin’s advocacy for working-class Americans as the “North Star” of his own politics.

Joshua Turek told the crowd that “in Iowa, Elon Musk does not decide elections” and vowed to travel to Washington to “overturn Citizens United” and “end the corruption we’re seeing on both sides of the aisle.”

Despite the bruising campaign, Turek maintained a tone of civic respect, stating, “I have deep respect for anyone who steps up to run.” He addressed the state directly in the second person: “Now, Iowa, let us be the city on the hill—the Iowa we grew up in that was the envy of the nation…. Iowa, this is where our comeback begins.”

The Historic Breakthrough for Women Candidates

All of Iowa’s winning Democratic candidates were women, adding to what was already a historic night for female candidates nationwide. The sweep represented a repudiation of what the state had become under Republican control, when it had been described as a MAGA citadel. Democrats now hold the Senate seat, the governor’s office, and a majority of the state’s congressional delegation.

As the returns came in, Turek’s claim that Iowa was “the center of the political universe” took on new weight—not as hyperbole, but as evidence that even a MAGA citadel could elect a Democrat.
