Hundreds of mourners gathered at Sacred Heart Church in Waterford on Monday for the joint funeral mass of Philip and Kim English and their young sons Callum and Jayden, who were killed in an arson attack at their Birchwood estate home last week. Two suspects remain remanded in custody.
The joint funeral service for Philip English, his wife Kim, and their two sons, 12-year-old Callum and nine-year-old Jayden, drew packed pews to the Sacred Heart Church on The Folly in Waterford city. Before the altar sat four coffins: two smaller white caskets flanked by larger pine boxes, accompanied by cream candles and a family photograph. Aides-de-camp representing President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin attended the mass, alongside government representatives Chief Whip Mary Butler and Minister of State John Cummins, as well as Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald.
The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, October 13, when emergency services rushed to a house fire in the Birchwood area. Two other children from the family survived the blaze and remain in critical condition in hospital. Investigators opened a murder investigation, treating the fire as a suspected targeted arson linked to drug debt intimidation.
Tributes from Family and Parish Priest at Sacred Heart Church
Parish priest Father Gerry Chestnutt addressed the grieving congregation, describing the victims as an innocent family who touched everyone around them. He told mourners that forces of darkness came in the dark and devastated the household.
On my own behalf and on behalf of everybody in this community, to you, Philip, Kim, Callum and Jayden, thank you for being yourselves, a beautiful family who did no wrong to anybody. We are better people for knowing you, for you were the salt of the earth and lights in this community.
Family members shared personal remembrances during the service. Philip was recalled as a warm and dedicated father, while Kim was remembered as a vocal and deeply devoted mother. Their sister and sister-in-law Charlene Companjen noted in a tribute that she was grateful for her final phone call the night before the attack, during which she told Kim she loved her. Callum, a member of Johnville Football Club who recently helped his team secure a victory, was remembered for his mischievous smile, prompting the club to retire his number five jersey. Jayden was remembered as a boundless source of energy and fun.
Direct Appeals Concerning the Drugs Trade and Community Impact
Speakers during the funeral mass connected the tragedy to wider societal issues. Bishop of Waterford and Lismore Alphonsus Cullinan addressed the congregation before the end of the service, stating that the family lost their lives as a result of a web of evil which is the drugs trade. He urged anyone engaging in recreational drug use to recognize that they are feeding an enterprise that destroys lives.
Businesses across Waterford closed their doors on Monday as a mark of respect. Following the service at Sacred Heart Church, four hearses carried the coffins past the family’s home in the Birchwood estate, accompanied by the playing of Gerry and the Pacemakers’ You’ll Never Walk Alone
—an anthem also featured at a community vigil last week. Burial took place at Kilbarry Cemetery.
Court Proceedings for Two Defendants Charged Over the Arson Attack
Legal proceedings in the murder investigation began over the weekend. On Saturday, two individuals appeared before a special sitting of Clonmel District Court charged in connection with the attack.
- Cian Stacey, 21, of no fixed abode, was charged with one count of criminal damage and two counts of assault causing serious harm. His solicitor requested a psychiatric assessment, which Judge Andrew Gubbins granted alongside legal aid.

Both defendants were remanded in custody to appear before Waterford District Court. Authorities maintain their appeal for anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who was present near Birch Avenue between 4:30am and 5:30am on the morning of October 13 to contact the incident room at Waterford Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line.
