Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s death has left a tangled web of unpaid car dealer debts and unresolved gifts, including a Toyota Fortuner gifted to musician Sugar Sugar, whose ownership remains in question.
Zimbabwean tycoon Wicknell Chivayo, who died in a helicopter crash on September 30, 2026, left behind a financial labyrinth. His estate, which includes properties and a private Gulfstream G550 jet, is now entangled in disputes over unpaid debts to car dealers and the legal status of gifted vehicles. Among the most visible cases is that of singer Taruvinga “Sugar Sugar” Manjokota, who received a Toyota Fortuner as a gift but lacks the vehicle’s registration book, casting doubt on his ownership.
Car Dealers Count Losses as Chivayo’s Estate Stalls
Three major Harare car dealers—Exquisite Cars, Enterprise Car Sales, and Faramatsi Motors—are collectively owed about US$5.1 million by Chivayo, according to sources familiar with his arrangements. Faramatsi Motors faces the largest outstanding bill at US$2.4 million. Despite Chivayo’s reputation for lavish gifting, these debts remain unresolved as his estate is being finalised.
A source close to Chivayo’s dealings with dealers noted that his income from government allowed him to operate under open-ended credit terms, typically settling bills within three months. Most of his income came from the government.
However, Chivayo’s death has left many transactions in limbo, with some dealers now seeking to recover unpaid debts.
Sugar Sugar’s Toyota Fortuner: A Gift in Legal Limbo
Sugar Sugar, a prominent Zimbabwean musician, claims he received a Toyota Fortuner as a gift from Chivayo but lacks the vehicle’s logbook, which is required for legal ownership. The car, part of a batch of 15 vehicles gifted to church members, has become a focal point of contention. Enterprise Car Sales owner Madzibaba Tendai Chipanga denied that any formal demand had been made for the vehicle’s return, stating, No car had been formally demanded back.
However, he confirmed that around 15 vehicles supplied to Chivayo remain unpaid, with the matter now tied to the process of finalising the late businessman’s estate.
Sugar Sugar told ZBC he had been approached and asked to hand the vehicle back, but the car dealer disputed this. I was asked to return the vehicle, but the dealer disputed this,
he said. Chipanga, however, maintained that the musician’s ownership was uncertain without the logbook. Matsika, who also owns Doves Funeral Services, said: We respect and protect and abide by our client confidentiality rules. If you buy a car from Faramatsi Motors, you will not hear anything relating to the transaction.

Chivayo’s Property Disputes and Unanswered Questions
Chivayo’s Gletwyn mansion in Harare, purchased from former police commissioner-general Augustine Chihuri in 2017 for US$2.555 million, remains a point of contention. The sale agreement required a US$1 million upon signing, with the remaining US$1.555 million due within a year. However, the transfer was never completed according to the original terms, and Chihuri could seek to reclaim the property by treating Chivayo’s part-payment as rent, rather than a deposit towards the purchase price, as he prepares to engage the executor.
Chivayo’s Gulfstream G550 jet flew out of Harare to Basel in Switzerland on October 18, 2026, but the circumstances of its movement remain unclear. Meanwhile, a central question for the estate’s administrators will be whether the properties and other high-value assets were fully paid for, and whether any remain subject to outstanding purchase agreements or other claims.
What Comes Next for Chivayo’s Estate?
The future of Chivayo’s estate hinges on untangling his complex web of liabilities and assets.
