Woman Drives Toward Two People Before Crashing Into North Charleston Church, Police Say

Aliyah Symone Reese, 21, turned herself in to North Charleston police on Tuesday and now faces a charge of unlawful conduct toward a child after her vehicle crashed into Grace City Church on Cosgrove Avenue, Live 5 News reported.

Police responded to the church shortly before noon on Oct. 27 after a vehicle struck the building. Officers found Reese standing near a car with significant front-end damage, her young child also at the scene. Both reportedly appeared extremely distraught.

Reese informed police that she came across the child’s father and his new girlfriend at a nearby convenience store, where she claimed the woman spit on her and both people attacked her. She said she fled the altercation but lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the church wall.

Surveillance Footage Tells a Different Story

Investigators did not take that account at face value. Surveillance video from the convenience store and the church showed something else entirely, according to the police report.

The video appeared to show a mutual physical confrontation between Reese and the other woman outside the store. Afterward, the woman and the child’s father walked toward the church. The video then showed Reese getting into her vehicle and driving around the corner, where she appeared to drive toward the two people in an attempt to strike them.

The vehicle missed both people and continued into the church, causing disabling damage to the building.

Charleston County EMS evaluated Reese’s child at the scene, and relatives then took the child to a hospital for further medical treatment.

Reese surrendered at North Charleston City Hall on Tuesday, where she was served with an arrest warrant.
