Wyoming Republicans Sweep Statewide Elections as Eric Barlow Wins Governor

Wyoming voters handed Republicans a clean sweep across the ballot Tuesday, electing state Sen. Eric Barlow as governor, sending U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman to the Senate and moving Secretary of State Chuck Gray into the House — a result that was never really in doubt once polls closed at 7 p.m., when the Associated Press called both the Senate and gubernatorial races, Oil City News reported.

The night capped a campaign season in which the GOP defended every contested seat it held in Natrona County and extended its grip on the state Capitol, where Republicans now hold 55 of 62 House seats and 29 of 31 Senate seats.

Hageman wins Wyoming Senate seat

Hageman, a Trump ally who first won her House seat in 2022 after defeating incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney, beat Democrat James Byrd for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Cynthia Lummis. She took 122,157 votes, roughly 65%, to Byrd’s share, and carried both Natrona County (14,246 to 7,690) and Laramie County (17,258 to 12,919), according to Oil City News and capcity.news.

“The people of Wyoming have hired me to do a new job,” Hageman said Tuesday night. “I will now move across the Capitol to the Senate, where I will again put my shoulder to the wheel and be the champion Wyoming wants in Washington, D.C.”

Gray, a former Casper radio host who served three terms in the Wyoming House before winning election as secretary of state in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement, captured the House seat Hageman left behind. He defeated Democrat Lisa Kinney 99,891 to 61,687, with Libertarian Shawn Johnson taking 13,665 and Constitution Party candidate Jeff Haggit 7,960. The AP called the race at 9:40 p.m. Gray had emerged from a nine-candidate Republican primary in August with just 25.4% of the vote, and he said he spent the general election campaign driving more than 60,000 miles across all 23 Wyoming counties.

Barlow becomes governor as GOP holds top statewide offices

Barlow, a veterinarian, Marine Corps veteran and Gillette native who has served in the Legislature since 2013 and previously as House speaker, won the governor’s race with 128,480 votes, or 68.6%, against Constitution Party candidate Rebecca Bextel (31,430 votes, 16.8%) and Democrat Kenneth Casner (27,469, 14.7%). He succeeds Gov. Mark Gordon, who is stepping down due to term limits. Natrona County backed Barlow 14,871 to 3,893 for Bextel and 3,209 for Casner; Laramie County gave him 20,521 votes, capcity.news reported.

Steve Harshman — a 40-year teacher and coach at Natrona County High School — beat Democrat Ana Cordova 136,744 to 45,318. State Auditor Kristi Racines and State Treasurer Curt Meier won new terms unopposed.
