19-Year-Old Democrat Daniel Darris-O’Connor Defeats Republican Incumbent

Daniel Darris-O’Connor unseats longtime Republican incumbent in Massachusetts

Nineteen-year-old Democrat Daniel Darris-O’Connor has unseated eight-term Republican incumbent Marc Lombardo in the 22nd Middlesex District, FOX 17 News reported.

The unofficial election results show Darris-O’Connor securing 51.3% of the vote, while Lombardo received 48.7%. The victory marks a significant shift in the district, as Darris-O’Connor becomes one of the youngest individuals ever elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Darris-O’Connor, a lifelong resident of Billerica, enters the State House with a background in local governance. He previously served as a student representative on the Billerica School Committee and was elected to the town’s Select Board at the age of 18. He will turn 20 years old the day before he is officially sworn in this coming January.

Local economic concerns drive the shift in Billerica

The campaign centered on immediate local pressures rather than abstract partisan rhetoric. Darris-O’Connor told WCVB that his platform addressed the rising costs of living and a perceived need for stronger representation within the town. He indicated that these specific economic anxieties resonated deeply with the voters of the 22nd Middlesex District.

Darris-O’Connor wrote on Instagram after his win: “Billerica, thank you. Over these next several weeks, there is a lot of work to do as I prepare to represent you this January. I’m grateful for your trust, and I’ll make sure to keep everyone informed every step of the way.” Darris-O’Connor shared those sentiments via Instagram following the announcement of the results.

Massachusetts House sees change

The transition in the 22nd Middlesex District highlights a change in state leadership. While Lombardo’s eight terms represent decades of established Republican presence in the region, the margin of victory suggests a district in flux.

Darris-O’Connor is scheduled to begin his term at the State House in January.
