Netflix’s high-stakes reality dating series Badly in Love returns for Season 2, relocating to the Marine Academy in Okinawa with an all-new cast of former delinquents. Hosted by MEGUMI, comedian Nagano, and hip-hop artist Awich, the show pairs intense pasts with fast-paced romance and mandatory community challenges.

Ari, a 29-year-old former Self-Defense Force member turned delinquent rapper, earned the nickname the Buddha because he almost never loses his temper, despite a past that includes escaping from a police car after being caught speeding at 120 km/h without a license. Mizuki Noguchi, a 27-year-old known as Bo, hails from Kurume, Fukuoka, and boasts a staggering history of 50 ex-girlfriends. Series producer MEGUMI returns as one of the three hosts alongside comedian Nagano, who serves as the voice and feelings of the audience. Joining them at the hosting table is Awich, a major Japanese hip-hop artist hailing from Okinawa who replaces rapper Ak-69. Awich brings her own deep connection to the show’s themes, delving into her personal history of moving to Atlanta, Georgia, at age 19, where she married and gave birth to a daughter.

Awich shares harrowing personal experiences during the season, recounting how attackers once shot at her in their Atlanta house and forced her to grab her baby daughter out of the crib to protect her. Following the later murder of her husband after his release from prison, Awich returned to Japan with her daughter.

Fast-Paced Romance and Early House Friction

The dynamic among the cast ignites immediately. According to early reviews, the initial connections and attractions are established at double the speed of the first season, with half the cast fighting other members for potential partners. On the men’s side, female contestants fight for the attention of Taisei, Ma-kun, and Kazu-kun, while Ruru and Hikaru emerge as the most sought-after women based on love letters and intentions.

Beneath the aggressive introductions and fast-paced drama lies a heavy layer of redemption and regret. Masaya Oda, known as Ma-kun, is a 28-year-old professional MMA fighter with a background in a biker gang and the yakuza. He turned his life around to spend more quality time with his child and family—a vulnerable revelation shared over dinner that won over several female cast members, though he admits, It actually takes me a while to make my move [around women].

Meanwhile, female cast members like 30-year-old Asuka Oguri—known as Assun and recognized as a legendary hostess running Glamourous Over in Nagoya—bring complex relationship histories to the island. Having started dating her first boyfriend at age 19 before he was sentenced to eight years in prison, Assun ultimately wrote a farewell letter to end the relationship when the wait proved too long. Other contestants carry even more tragic backgrounds, such as Marina Takaoka, who shared a history of surviving physically abusive relationships where knives were pulled on her.
