Five American citizens, Ecuador’s intelligence chief, and a Telemundo media executive died Wednesday when a safari helicopter crashed in a remote, rugged area of northern Kenya. The aircraft went down in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe during a charter flight operated by Lady Lori Helicopters.
The Fatal Flight and Emergency Response in Samburu County
The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 operated by local provider Lady Lori Helicopters, took off on a charter flight from the Loisaba Conservancy carrying six passengers and a pilot, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. Aviation officials noted that the flight was bound for the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County when it crashed at 9:13 a.m.
The crash site in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe presented immediate, severe challenges for emergency responders. David Nkoroi, the police commander for Samburu, confirmed to reporters that all seven people on board died in the impact, though local authorities initially withheld identities pending notification procedures.
Search and recovery operations faced immediate physical barriers. The Kenya Red Cross reported that its multiagency emergency response teams were heavily hampered by difficult terrain access and an active fire burning at the crash site. Video footage verified by news organizations showed black smoke rising against the mountain and parts of the aircraft still burning amidst scattered wreckage. Tropic Air Kenya dispatched two of its own helicopters to assist with search and rescue operations, while additional crews were deployed from Isiolo to reinforce the ground response.
Identities of the Victims Confirmed Across Three Continents
The U.S. State Department confirmed that five American citizens were among the victims. Embassy in Kenya was in direct contact with local authorities and providing consular assistance.

Separately, international corporate and government offices identified two prominent officials on board. NBCUniversal announced that José Alberto Suárez, president and general manager of several Telemundo stations in Florida including Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49, and Telemundo Fort Myers–Naples, was killed in the accident. In a memo to staff, NBCUniversal leadership remembered Suárez as a deeply respected leader and beloved friend and colleague
who cared intensely about his teams and the communities they served.
Ecuadorian officials confirmed that the country’s national intelligence director, Michele Sensi-Contugi, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan, also died in the crash. Sensi-Contugi, a close associate of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, was appointed director general of the country’s strategic intelligence center in 2024.
Operator and Aviation Industry Context
The aircraft was owned and operated by Lady Lori Helicopters, a domestic charter company ferrying visitors to distant wildlife conservancies. The guests on board were traveling with luxury safari company &Beyond. Lady Lori Helicopters released a statement expressing profound grief over the accident and confirming its full cooperation with ongoing investigations.

The transport ministry and the Air Accident Investigation Department took charge of leading the formal inquiries into the cause of the disaster. Kenya relies heavily on domestic aviation carriers to support its vibrant tourism industry, ferrying travelers to remote regional destinations like Mount Ololokwe and various private wildlife conservancies in Samburu County.
A Disturbing Trend of Aviation Tragedies in Kenya
This disaster highlights an ongoing safety pattern surrounding domestic air travel in the East African nation. Helicopter crashes have occurred with increasing frequency in recent years. In February, a member of parliament was among six people killed when a helicopter went down in the hilly terrain of western Kenya’s Nandi County. Major military incidents have also shaken the country, including a 2024 crash that killed military chief Gen Francis Omondi Ogolla alongside nine others in an army helicopter accident in the country’s west, as well as a 2021 military helicopter crash near Nairobi that claimed the lives of at least ten soldiers.
