Police Captain and Suspect Killed in Knysna Shootout During Operation

A Western Cape police captain and a 38-year-old suspect died during an early Wednesday shootout in Knysna. The 50-year-old officer was investigating the recent murders of former mayor Aubrey Tsengwa and two other local politicians as part of an integrated firearms operation in the Sewende Laan informal settlement.

The deadly exchange unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning at the Sewende Laan informal settlement along Uniondale Road in the Garden Route town. Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed that the 50-year-old officer, attached to the provincial Tactical Response Team, was participating in an integrated police operation following up on information about illegal firearms.

During the operation, a shootout erupted between law enforcement and a 38-year-old suspect. The suspect was also killed in the exchange, and investigators recovered two firearms from his possession at the scene.

In the wake of the operation, psychosocial support was deployed directly to the SAPS team at the scene as well as to the fallen captain’s colleagues stationed in Cape Town. Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi conveyed formal condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues following the tragedy.

Unraveling a Wave of Political Violence in Knysna

The slain officer had been specifically dispatched to Knysna from Cape Town to anchor investigations into a devastating succession of high-profile shootings that struck the coastal municipality within a 48-hour window. The violence began when former executive mayor Aubrey Tsengwa, 48, was gunned down on Ngxalo Street in Joodsekamp.

Tsengwa, who represented Ward 8 and served as mayor from August 2022 until February 2025 before being removed via a motion of no confidence, was traveling home in a vehicle with three passengers when an unknown gunman opened fire. Tsengwa sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and upper body, dying at the scene, while a passenger suffered an arm injury.

Less than 24 hours after the mayor’s death, a second shooting took place in Bongani. Gunmen targeted a vehicle carrying former Ward 7 councillor Mandla Matiwane, 47, and Knysna Codeta chair Mandla Tyololo, 48. Both men died in the attack. All three victims were members of the African National Congress (ANC).

Court Appearances and Reinforced Investigation Teams

While investigators probe potential connections between the killings, the legal system has already begun processing arrests tied to the former mayor’s assassination. Three suspects—identified as Vusumzi Gungu, 46; Thobelani Lakhe, 39; and Lonwabo Faleni, 33—have appeared in court facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The trio appeared in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court, where they were remanded in custody while the state opposes bail pending a court return. Meanwhile, the provincial serious violent crimes detective team investigating the assassinations has been reinforced with additional detectives deployed specifically to handle the parallel shooting investigation.

Political Instability and Escalating Provincial Security Concerns

The sequence of high-level killings has cast a harsh spotlight on political instability, factional friction, and the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region. Democratic Alliance spokesperson on police oversight and community safety in the Western Cape, Benedicta van Minnen, sharply criticized the government’s security response to expanding violence.

Gun violence is becoming a serious threat across the Western Cape; it is no longer confined to particular hotspots or urban areas – it is reaching communities as far as Knysna, Van Minnen stated, calling on authorities to present a clear strategy for reinforcing SAPS resources, intelligence gathering, and specialized units.

Although police have confirmed that investigations into the murders of Matiwane and Tyololo remain ongoing alongside the ongoing manhunt for additional suspects in Tsengwa’s death, authorities have cautioned that a definitive link or political motive has not yet been formally established.
