Late chances for substitute João Pedro and fellow replacement Jamie Gittens—who struck the foot of the post in stoppage time—did not alter the scoreline. The clean sheet and comfortable finish brought Alonso his second victory in two matches to begin the campaign, following an opening Premier League win over Fulham.
