Nintendo Reveals Ocarina of Time Remake Release Date, a Zelda Switch 2 and a Real Ocarina

Nintendo has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will launch on Nov. 5, according to a presentation held during the company’s The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on Tuesday. Series producer Eiji Aonuma referred to the title as a faithful interpretation using modern technologies during the broadcast, noting that it carries a different appeal from recent entries like Breath of the Wild.

The new version of the Nintendo 64 classic has been rebuilt from the ground up for the Switch 2, featuring a brand-new 3D visual style and fully voiced cutscenes for its characters. Despite the overhaul to visuals and voice acting, Link will remain silent. The presentation showcased the opening sequence in Kokiri Forest, the Great Deku Tree, Hyrule Field, and the first section of Hyrule Castle Town, maintaining the core structure and distinct regional loading screens of the original adventure while introducing extra areas and shop minigames.

Modern Mechanical Upgrades and Microphone Integration

The remake introduces several significant quality-of-life adjustments to modernize gameplay. Players no longer rely on automatic ledge-jumping, as the game now includes a dedicated jump button, alongside a free-moving camera, the ability to manually dash, quick item-switching, and motion control aiming. Water navigation has also been streamlined, allowing Link to dive underwater and swim properly without the requirement of equipping and removing iron boots, while a new rolling mechanic lets players transition into a sprint.

A notable feature tied to the hardware involves the in-game musical instrument. Instead of relying strictly on standard button prompts to input songs, players can utilize the Switch 2’s microphone to hum, sing, or play notes. If Link knows the tune, the game recognizes the sound and completes the input. Additionally, first-time players can access Zelda Notes through the Nintendo Switch app to track progress and receive location hints. Quest logs are further supported by a new menu feature called Threads of Time.

Hardware Bundles, Physical Accessories, and Merchandise

Leading up to the software launch, Nintendo is releasing a special edition Switch 2 for the 40th anniversary on Oct. 29, complete with a custom design on the console and dock inspired by the game. A matching Switch 2 Pro Controller and carrying case will also be sold separately, alongside an exclusive Pro Controller featuring its own display stand available only at Nintendo Store locations in New York City and San Francisco.

Expanding on the musical theme, Nintendo plans to release an official, physical ocarina modeled after the in-game item. Fans will be able to choose between a traditional acoustic model and an electric version manufactured by Hori that can play songs via a button. While specific pricing and exact launch dates were not finalized, Nintendo confirmed the ocarinas will arrive later in the year following a live demonstration by Aonuma.
