Police have detained a second pilot in the Klang Valley as an international drug trafficking investigation widens. The ongoing probe stems from the August arrest of a Malaysian second officer who was intercepted in Jakarta carrying an estimated RM45 million in ecstasy and methamphetamine.

The Klang Valley Arrest and Financial Trail

Investigators in Malaysia have expanded their reach in a high-profile narcotics case by detaining a second pilot in the Klang Valley area. Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the latest suspect was taken into custody two days prior to the public announcement during a press briefing.

The suspect, described as being in his 30s, is employed by a different airline than the co-pilot initially detained in Indonesia. Police stated that the man tested negative for drugs, indicating his alleged involvement lay elsewhere in the operation.

“He was caught in the Klang Valley area and is in his 30s. He was involved in the handling of the money, specifically in the transferring of money.”

Authorities maintain that the pilot served as a financial conduit, managing the proceeds of the illicit sales and facilitating the flow of cash between the trafficking syndicate and the detained airline crew members. Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan told the press on Wednesday (Sept 9) that drug tests conducted showed that he tested negative for drugs.

The Jakarta Airport Seizure That Sparked the Probe

The widening international investigation traces back to an arrest made on Aug 16, shortly after the Malaysian second officer, 39, arrived at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Malaysia Airlines flight MH727 from Kuala Lumpur. Customs officers searched the pilot’s luggage and uncovered a massive narcotics consignment. Police subsequently found 14 packets containing 70,114 ecstasy pills, weighing about 25kg, in his luggage. Another four grammes of methamphetamine were discovered in his hand luggage (also referred to as carry-on belongings). Law enforcement officials estimated the combined street value of the seized drugs at around RM45 million.

According to disclosures from Indonesian police, the co-pilot had allegedly been offered RM50,000 to transport the drugs to Jakarta, where another individual was supposed to collect the consignment from a hotel.

Expanding Custody and Flight Risk Discoveries

The arrest of the second pilot brings the total number of suspects detained in connection with the case to seven. The breakthrough followed an operational deployment by an NCID officer team sent to Jakarta from Aug 11 to 15 to question the first pilot.

Previously, six suspects were arrested based on information obtained during the questioning of the first pilot by the NCID officers. The suspects are believed to be suppliers and couriers who provided drugs to the first pilot. Furthermore, Bukit Aman reported that four suspects in the pilot drug case fled M’sia after his arrest.
