Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 10, 2026, introducing a redesigned Health Sensing System, an advanced S11 chip, and Audio Intelligence features.
Apple expanded its wearable lineup during its Surprise and Shine
event, introducing the Apple Watch Series 12 and the rugged Apple Watch Ultra 4. While the exterior design remains familiar, the inner architecture has undergone a complete re-architecting centered on a new Health Sensing System and Apple’s powerful custom S11 chip.
A Rebuilt Health Sensing System and Higher-Frequency Biometrics
The centerpiece of both new smartwatches is the redesigned Health Sensing System, which pairs upgraded optical and electrical heart sensors with the S11 chip. According to technical details provided by Apple, the electrode surface area is larger for better skin contact, while the optical sensor uses a ring of photodiodes paired with larger, more power-efficient green LEDs. This hardware overhaul supports a 32-petal design
that replaces older configurations to minimize light leakage and boost measurement precision.
The engineering changes allow background heart rate measurements to occur every five seconds, capturing data 60 times more frequently than prior generations. Simultaneously, heart rate variability sampling increases significantly, running about 24 times more often to give wearers a clearer view of stress and recovery. These high-frequency readings feed a new readiness score scaled from zero to 10. The score evaluates recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep data to issue actionable daily guidance ranging from recovery recommendations to pushing workout intensity, updating continuously as new biometric information flows in throughout the day.
Audio Intelligence, Privacy Safeguards, and S11 Processing
Sound Recognition alerts deaf or hard-fought wearers to important environmental noises like sirens and doorbells, while automatic Shazam music recognition displays nearby tracks directly in the Smart Stack. For productivity and accessibility, Live Rewind lets users double-press the Digital Crown to view the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet. Furthermore, Siri Recap generates high-level summaries and key points from ambient discussions.

To address inevitable privacy concerns surrounding ambient listening, Apple incorporated a dedicated hardware-isolated secure enclave with an isolated audio buffer. Users are in control and can choose whether to opt in to each Audio Intelligence feature,
the company stated, noting that raw audio is immediately deleted after processing, remains inaccessible to watchOS or Apple, and omits speaker attribution entirely.

“Apple Watch Series 12 is the most advanced health and fitness companion we’ve ever created, with our new Health Sensing System and S11 chip, Apple Watch Series 12 gives you meaningful insights, like readiness, so you can better understand how to take on your day and care for your health, plus intelligence features that make everyday life easier. And it’s all wrapped in a beautifully thin, light design you’ll love wearing all day and night.”

Pricing, Battery Performance, and Regional Availability
Both models support pre-orders starting immediately after the September 10 announcement, with retail availability officially opening on Friday, September 18. The entry-level Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 in the United States, while Australian pricing begins at $649 for the 42mm aluminium GPS model, extending up to $1,689 for the ceramic 46mm cellular configuration.
Battery endurance diverges between the two lines. The Series 12 maintains its standard 24-hour everyday battery life while expanding outdoor workout tracking up to 10 hours—a 25 percent improvement over last year—and supporting fast charging that replenishes 12 hours of use in 15 minutes. The Ultra 4 delivers over two days of standard operation, offering up to 50 hours of general use or extending to 84 hours when switched into Low Power Mode.
