CD Projekt Red to Launch The Witcher 3 Remaster on September 29, 2026

CD Projekt Red is overhauling The Witcher 3 with a remaster launching September 29, 2026, aiming to make the classic open-world RPG feel like a modern 2026 release through deeply reworked animations, gameplay systems, and rendering updates that run efficiently on both PC and the Steam Deck.

The upcoming release launches September 29 as a free update for all existing owners of the Complete Edition, bringing significant technical and quality-of-life revisions that reach far beyond the visual upgrades introduced in the next-gen update of 2022.

Reworking Animations and Gameplay from Scratch

According to executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba, the team focused heavily on elements left untouched since the initial launch.

With the remaster, it is even bigger and it’s also quite heavy, maybe even heavier on the technical level. But what is more important is that we are touching these aspects of the game which weren’t touched since we launched it. I’m talking about the animation. I’m talking about the gameplay. I’m talking about the quality of life, how you actually play the game. We wanted to make it [comparable] with any other game which is launching these days. It’s so easy to get used to these new improvements that it’s hard to go back.

CDPR built numerous core components from scratch, including the camera behavior and pathfinding systems. These granular refinements create a standard of responsiveness that the studio believes will make revisiting the unremastered version remarkably difficult for returning veterans.

Technical Performance on Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2

Despite the heavier technical load and expanded feature set, the developers do not expect overall performance to drop compared to the original release. Modern rendering techniques allow the engine to process advanced visual assets with minimal performance cost.

When it comes to Steam Deck, based on what we see, the game will work the same way, but look much much better. Because from one side we are bringing all these improvements, we are bringing new content, we are upgrading the assets … new rendering features. With the newer rendering engine, many of the systems just work faster. So we are just capable of showing a more beautiful image with the same cost, and this is also the case for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is coming together with the Remaster as well.

The comprehensive overhaul raises minimum PC requirements considerably, reflecting the deeper systemic and asset updates baked into the new build.

Timing, Expansion Plans, and Franchise Legacy

The remaster first appeared at Gamescom alongside a teaser for the Songs of the Past DLC. For players tracking the studio’s schedule, the September release date arrives alongside hardware momentum from the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 platform.
