Israeli human rights group B’Tselem released a comprehensive report titled The Elimination Project, accusing Israel of systematically dismantling Palestinian collective life in the West Bank. The military and government vehemently rejected the allegations as groundless, while international celebrities backed the NGO’s call for intervention.
A major new report released by the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem has ignited fierce debate over the reality on the ground in the occupied West Bank. Titled The Elimination Project, the document argues that Israeli policy is not merely a collection of separate rights violations, but an orchestrated strategy aimed at dismantling the foundations of Palestinian society. The publication draws upon more than 2,000 testimonies collected from Palestinians since October 2023, paired with three decades of research by the NGO.
Five Domains of Action and the Logic of Territorial Control
According to B’Tselem, the mechanism operates simultaneously across five distinct domains: violence and intimidation, movement restrictions, economic strangulation, social and political destruction, and ethnic cleansing and territorial takeover. B’Tselem director of international relations Ori Givati explained the scope of the findings in a recent interview, noting that policies previously viewed as isolated incidents actually share a unified intent. When we look at Israel’s policies in the West Bank together and fully examine them, we actually find that there is one very coherent logic behind all of them, Givati stated.
The report asserts that Palestinians face routine disruption in basic daily activities, including traveling to work, attending school, receiving medical care, and visiting family. In a video accompanying the release, B’Tselem Executive Director Yuli Novak stated that over the past three years, this systemic approach has become more lethal, violent and explicit. The publication also asserts that Israel’s actions meet the legal thresholds for apartheid, genocide, and ethnic cleansing. The report claims that at any moment, Palestinians may be exposed to violence by soldiers or armed settler militias, arrested and imprisoned, subjected to abuse and humiliation, and sometimes even killed.
Official Rejection and Security Justifications From the Military
The Israeli government and the Israel Defense Forces rejected the report’s core assertions in unequivocal terms. In a statement to the press, the IDF maintained that the claims are entirely divorced from reality. Any claim that the State of Israel, including the IDF, is advancing a course of action aimed at eliminating the Palestinians as a people is false, baseless, and blatantly disconnected from reality, the military stated.
The IDF further emphasized its operational mandate in Judea and Samaria, stating that its primary mission is to thwart terrorism, protect all residents, and enforce law and order in the area. Government and military officials frequently point out that the population in question consists of non-citizens involved in a decades-long armed conflict, noting that future political rights are tied to bilateral negotiations under United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, which have remained frozen since the October 7, 2023, attacks led by Hamas. Israel has also rejected apartheid allegations in the past, noting that it has well over two million Israeli-Arab citizens with full rights, including representation in all areas of government.
International Attention, Celebrity Backing, and Unresolved Legal Questions
The release of The Elimination Project
drew an unusual level of high-profile cultural backing. Prominent figures, including Cynthia Nixon, Susan Sarandon, Michael Stipe, and Emmy Award-winning actor Hannah Einbinder, appeared alongside B’Tselem researchers in promotional media to urge global intervention alongside figures such as Mohammad Romaneh, Maya Flohin, and Yair Dvir. The international community must end the impunity that allows it to continue, Cynthia Nixon said in the advocacy video. Susan Sarandon added that the world must act to stop Israel’s Elimination Project in the West Bank.
Even Israel’s Western critics do not accept blanket allegations of genocide as established fact. Legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice have experienced delays stretching to at least 2029 to cope with a 4,000-page comprehensive defense presented by Israel earlier this year, and Israel continues to deny all such blanket accusations.
