Crowding the streets and locking down traffic, protesters participated in a Hands Around the Kennedy Center demonstration organized by the group Hands Off the Arts. Attendees carried signs, donned costumes, and voiced alarm that the administration might follow through on warnings that the institution could be torn down.
The protests followed a tumultuous week in federal court and a stormy board meeting that laid bare an intense institutional conflict. Federal Court Intervention and the 30-Day Demolition Notice
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper intervened on Thursday to prevent the board from demolishing the building or constructing any new structure without giving 30 days of advance notice. The ruling followed a flurry of legal filings and counter-filings in federal court.

Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio, an ex-officio member of the board. A source familiar with the call described the interaction to CNN as f—ing crazy. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle defended the administration’s intervention, stating that decades of Democratic neglect left the national treasure to rot while water damage spread and infrastructure crumbled.
