Canby Kidnapping Recovery and Arrest of Vince Edgar Chavez
A 10-year-old Oregon girl who was abducted from her apartment in the middle of the night was found alive more than 12 hours later, tied up inside a closet about 10 miles away, authorities said.

The ordeal began at approximately 1:39 a.m. local time on October 28, 2026. Authorities in Canby, Oregon, stated that a man entered an apartment, violently assaulted a 12-year-old child, and took her 10-year-old sister. The injured 12-year-old was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Officials have not released an update regarding her condition.
Chris Owen, chief deputy district attorney of Clackamas County, described the incident. “Very early this morning, a family’s worst nightmare happened. The young child…was taken by force. Her sister was viciously assaulted,” Owen said.
The Search and Rescue Operation
Following the home invasion, the Canby Police Department mobilized alongside multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to locate the missing child. More than 12 hours later, investigators found the girl at a residence in Oregon City, roughly 10 miles away from the initial scene.
At approximately 2:45 p.m. local time on October 28, authorities entered the home. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the 10-year-old was discovered tied up in a closet. She was taken to a medical facility for treatment of her injuries and evaluation.
Officers arrested 35-year-old Vince Edgar Chavez at the Oregon City residence where the victim was located. The U.S. Marshals Service noted that Chavez attempted to escape as law enforcement officers entered the property. It remained unclear whether Chavez had an attorney who could comment on his behalf, and Owen said an announcement of criminal charges would be forthcoming.
Community Reaction and Next Steps
State Sen. Christine Drazan, a Republican representing Canby who is running for Oregon governor, addressed the public following the rescue. “Thank you to everyone who shared the information, helped spread the word, and supported the efforts to bring [her] home safely,” Drazan wrote in a social media statement. “Let’s wrap our arms around both children and their family as they begin to recover from this horrific tragedy.”
Authorities continue to process evidence as the legal proceedings against Chavez advance.
