Anika Kinnear Honored as 2026 Lincoln Laureate
Anika Kinnear, a student from Florida, was officially inaugurated as a 2026 Student Lincoln Laureate on October 24. The ceremony, held at the Old State Capitol Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, recognized more than 50 students from across the state for their combined achievements in the classroom and their respective extracurricular fields.
The Lincoln Academy of Illinois presents this honor to students who demonstrate a commitment to public service and excellence in their academic disciplines. For Kinnear, a member of the class of 2027, the designation serves as recognition of her ongoing work in environmental justice and African American studies. As part of the award, she received the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award, a Lincoln medallion, a challenge coin, and a $1,000 check from the Academy.
Kinnear Balances Academic Honors with Varsity Athletics
Kinnear’s path to this honor is marked by a rigorous commitment to both her studies and athletics. According to records, she has balanced a demanding academic schedule with three varsity letters, earning Academic All-MWC honors in each of the last three seasons.
The 2025-26 season proved to be a high-water mark for her on the court. Kinnear led her team in total points, field goals, rebounds, and minutes per game, while also earning the team’s “Most Improved Player” award. Her performance included two double-doubles, notably scoring 18 points and securing 11 rebounds against Grinnell College on February 14, 2026. This athletic consistency has mirrored her academic focus, as she was also inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma and was named a CSC Academic All-District selection.
The Stakes of Policy and Perspective
The Lincoln Laureate program, which has recognized student leaders for over half a century, emphasizes the intersection of talent and public service. Todd Shapiro, Chancellor of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois, noted that the program’s newest members continue a legacy of service that links current students with those honored when the program began 52 years ago.
In her application for the honor, she emphasized the difficulty of maintaining a moral compass in a polarized environment.
In a world of ever-growing divide, hostility, and turmoil, acting in the best interest for the greater good isn’t always an easy choice.
It sometimes means making the hard, unpopular decisions in order to stand for those who need it most.
Kinnear Focuses on Policy and Equity
The recognition of the 2026 Student Lincoln Laureates highlights the role of their individual institutions in recognizing excellence in both curricular and extracurricular activities. As Kinnear moves forward with her degree, her focus remains on the intersection of policy and equity. The full list of this year’s recipients remains available through The Lincoln Academy of Illinois, which also maintains the public record of the annual ceremony.
