APPA Leadership Academy Level II Enhances Interpersonal Skills

The APPA Leadership Academy is currently offering its Level II course, Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills, designed specifically for educational facilities professionals.

This program serves as the second step in a four-part professional development progression, according to APPA.

The academy aims to prepare participants to cultivate environments defined by trust and lifelong learning within their respective institutions. The curriculum is structured to address four distinct areas of leadership: individual, interpersonal, managerial, and organizational. Participants earn professional development hours upon the completion of each level, with the ultimate goal for many being the completion of all four levels to become a Leadership Academy Graduate.

While the APPA program focuses on facilities management, other academic institutions offer distinct leadership development models tailored to different career stages. This program emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional communication through real-world organizational challenges.

While APPA targets established facilities professionals, the Iowa academy is designed for students aiming to bridge the gap between their academic program and the professional workforce.

The two programs utilize different methods to measure success. The APPA Leadership Academy follows a structured progression of four levels:

  • Individual Effectiveness Skills (Level I)
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills (Level II)
  • Managerial Effectiveness Skills (Level III)
  • Organizational Effectiveness Skills (Level IV)

Instead, students conclude their experience by delivering a comprehensive final report and executive presentation to client leadership. The Iowa program also provides personalized career coaching and faculty mentorship, whereas the APPA model focuses on the professional development of individuals already embedded in educational facilities roles.

The practical application of these programs also varies. APPA’s program remains focused on the specific operational needs of facilities professionals, providing them with skills to manage institutional infrastructure and staff dynamics.

Both models highlight a growing trend in higher education and professional organizations: the prioritization of experiential learning over traditional classroom instruction.
