The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is seeking candidates with experience conducting pre-employment investigations.

Inside Maryland’s Billion-Dollar Public Safety Workforce

Operating on a budget of more than $1 billion, the department manages security at its institutions alongside restorative justice projects designed to help offenders reintegrate into society upon release.

The Day-to-Day Scope of a State Background Investigator

The position requires the completion of comprehensive background investigations. Investigators complete and review criminal database checks on non-mandated civilian and vendor applicants, and correspond directly with prospective applicants regarding their background checks and disposition paperwork. Preferred candidates have experience using criminal justice systems, including the Maryland Court Search, CJIS, METERS, and gang databases. Experience interpreting and applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, and procedures when conducting pre-employment investigations is also preferred.

Applicants Need High School Diploma and Work Experience

To qualify for consideration, applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a high school equivalency certificate, alongside one year of administrative staff or professional work. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience. Alternatively, the required experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with U.S. Armed Forces military service as a commissioned officer performing staff duties that required the frequent application of independent analysis and judgment to interpret complex regulations, policies, rules, or administrative plans, or the analysis of operational procedures and programs with suggestions for improvement. One year of experience conducting pre-employment investigations is also required.

Selected candidates enter a benefits structure administered by the State of Maryland. The compensation package incorporates medical, dental, and vision coverage paired with a state pension, supplemental retirement options, and the opportunity to join the Maryland State Employees Credit Union. State employees receive fifteen days of accumulated sick leave per year, ten days of accumulated annual leave per year, and six personnel days annually (prorated based on start date), alongside up to sixty days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.

State Ranks Successful Applicants on Eligible Employment List

The state ranks successful applicants as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and places them on the eligible employment list for at least one year. Online application submission is highly recommended. Candidates unable to complete digital submissions can email paper applications and supplemental questionnaires to department personnel via designated state electronic mail channels.
