Belmont Village Partners With Rice University to Expand Lifelong Learning for Seniors

Expanding Academic Horizons at Belmont Village

Senior living provider Belmont Village is forging deeper ties with higher education. The company is partnering with Rice University to expand access to university-level courses and learning opportunities for older adults. According to Belmont Village President Mercedes Kerr, this initiative represents a new phase of growth and operational momentum heading into 2027.

The launch builds on an initial pilot program rolled out across 12 Belmont Village communities in collaboration with Rice University’s Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. Dubbed the Lifelong University program, the offering brings faculty- and expert-led virtual courses directly to older residents. These academic lectures are paired with interactive discussions and related activities facilitated by specially trained community-level staff.

Past curriculum topics have ranged widely across disciplines. Residents have explored subjects as diverse as Art Deco architecture and the behavioral study of ants. The program design relies heavily on feedback from both residents and staff to refine course delivery and ensure meaningful engagement. To support this, Belmont Village staff receive customized training to help participants dive deeper into the material beyond the virtual lectures.

“Rice and Belmont Village share a fundamental belief that learning should not have an expiration date,” Belmont Village Founder Patricia Will said in a news release. “Rice brings extraordinary academic resources and expertise, while Belmont brings nearly 30 years of experience understanding older adults from how they engage and what interests them, along with how programming can be successfully integrated into a senior living environment.”

Building a Foundation for Advanced Research

The academic partnership goes far beyond casual continuing education. Since its inception, the Lifelong University program has gained steady popularity, drawing increased participation from both residents and Rice faculty members. The collaboration has also sparked creative workshops designed to help residents build social connections while learning.

This initiative establishes a firm foundation for broader program development. Plans are already underway to expand the curriculum syllabus and introduce new interactive learning formats. Belmont Village is no stranger to deep-rooted university collaborations. Back in 2016, the company partnered with UC San Diego to connect field researchers with senior living operations. That relationship ultimately culminated in the 2023 launch of the Living Lab at Belmont Village La Jolla, marking the first-ever research space embedded directly inside a senior living community.

The on-site lab investigates physical and functional assessments, biosensor testing, behavioral interventions, and emerging technologies. Past studies have examined meditation interventions, fall prevention, mobility tracking, mobile app blood pressure monitoring, and ambient sensing safety technology.

“That gives us an opportunity to test what’s out there and what will be done differently, and we spend a lot of time and effort into this concept of aging successfully,” Belmont Village President Mercedes Kerr told Senior Housing News at the 2026 NIC Fall Conference in Chicago.

Belmont Village Integrates Academic Research into Memory Care

Translating academic research into daily operations remains a core pillar of the company’s strategy. Much of this work flows through the early-stage memory care program known as Circle of Friends. Designed for older adults experiencing mild cognitive impairment or early-stage memory loss, the framework pairs closely with advanced memory care offerings for individuals managing more severe cognitive changes.

The overarching approach centers on brain fitness. By establishing formalized partnerships with academic institutions like Vanderbilt University, UCLA, and USC, Belmont Village anchors its daily operations and resident engagement strategies directly in gerontological research. Kerr views these close-knit academic alliances as essential for advancing aging research while simultaneously driving improvements in resident care.

Preventive interventions in brain health represent a critical frontier for senior living operators today. As residents increasingly choose to age in place over long tenures, access to specialized wellness alternatives becomes vital for both the individuals and the provider.

Staff Training Supports Late-Stage Memory Care Operations

Providing high-end care extends far beyond independent and assisted living. Operators must also address late-stage memory care to ensure a dignified quality of life for residents dealing with advanced dementia. Kerr highlighted the human impact of these programs, recalling instances where residents who were nonverbal for extended periods regained their speech after participating in targeted memory care routines.

Supporting these complex operations requires thorough staff training and clear career advancement pathways. To prepare for broader organizational scaling, Belmont Village recently added a leader overseeing human capital alongside a chief technology officer. In 2026, corporate leadership overhauled the company’s underlying technology platforms and governance frameworks surrounding artificial intelligence, aiming to maintain operational agility both at the corporate office and across individual communities.

This internal scaling matches an aggressive development pipeline. Even amid difficult industry-wide development conditions since 2019, Belmont Village has successfully opened several luxury properties:

  • 2024: Opened Belmont Village Senior Living Coral Gables, a 10-story luxury community featuring 232 apartments across independent living, assisted living, and memory care, complete with an on-site primary care center operated via a partnership with Baptist Health South Florida.
  • 2025: Completed Belmont Village San Ramon in San Ramon, California, a 177-unit luxury community developed in partnership with Sunset Development.
  • 2026: Opened the 11-story Belmont Village Aventura community in Aventura, Florida, alongside partner Turnberry, marking the company’s third South Florida location.

Looking ahead, the company is preparing to open Belmont Village Rancho Santa Fe in 2027. Located within a gated residential community in San Diego, California, the 187,430-square-foot property spans a seven-acre site and will feature clinical and wellness offerings developed in partnership with the UC San Diego Center for Healthy Aging, alongside collaborators Greystar, HPI Architecture, and W.E. O’Neil Construction.

Reflecting on nearly three decades of service as the company approaches its 30th anniversary next year, leadership points to consistent development growth, strong operating performance, and steady demand as key drivers of momentum. Propelled by these factors, Belmont Village heads into 2027 with clear operational direction aimed at perfecting the resident experience for the next generation.
