Bristol Community College Partners With SkillsUSA Massachusetts

Bristol Community College announced it will launch an affiliation with SkillsUSA Massachusetts for the 2026–2027 academic year, creating a structured platform to connect students with career readiness, leadership development and real-world professional experiences, Bristol Community College reported. The partnership opens a statewide network of peers, educators, employers and community partners that students can use to test their skills, build professional relationships and see clearer pathways from education to employment, advancement or continued study.

Leaders, faculty members and workforce professionals at Bristol will look for ways to weave SkillsUSA Massachusetts experiences into programs tailored to individual student needs. Potential opportunities include SkillsUSA Career Essentials, chapter and student leadership experiences, state and national competitions, service projects, employer engagement and other career-connected learning activities woven directly into the curriculum.

Building “Job Ready Day One” Graduates

College officials framed the affiliation as a deliberate shift away from career preparation that happens only at graduation. “At Bristol, we believe education must do more than prepare students to earn a credential, it must prepare them to lead and thrive in the world beyond our classrooms,” said Dr. Sedgwick L. Harris, President of Bristol Community College. “The college’s affiliation with SkillsUSA Massachusetts strengthens the connection between learning and opportunity, providing students with meaningful ways to develop the technical, professional and leadership skills that employers and communities need.”

“Career readiness cannot be something we hope happens by graduation. We must build it into the student experience from day one. At Bristol, our goal is for students to be Job Ready Day One: graduates with the technical ability to do the work, the professional skills to succeed and the confidence to lead. SkillsUSA gives us a nationally recognized framework to help make that expectation real. We have an opportunity at Bristol to help redefine what career and technical education looks like at the community college level in Massachusetts, and we intend to lead that work.” — Dr. Jillian Bumpus, Vice President of Economic and Workforce Solutions, Bristol Community College

Through the SkillsUSA Framework, students develop personal skills, workplace skills and technical skills grounded in academics. This triad gives employers a standardized, nationally recognized signal that a graduate can perform on the job, communicate professionally and solve problems under pressure.

A Statewide Network Anchored in Regional Workforce Needs

SkillsUSA Massachusetts, Inc. supports students and educators in middle school, high school and college programs across the Commonwealth. The organization is committed to empowering success for any student, any skill and any career, and its framework emphasizes education, leadership, service and career experiences.

“Bristol Community College is demonstrating the kind of commitment that makes SkillsUSA meaningful: giving students repeated opportunities to practice leadership, build professional skills and connect their education to careers. This effort supports Bristol’s goal of transforming lives via education and workforce training while helping drive the region’s economic growth. For 60 years, the college has served as a leading resource for education and workforce development in Massachusetts, operating locations in Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton and online.

With campuses serving those communities plus comprehensive online offerings, Bristol reaches a diverse student body that includes traditional-age learners, working adults and English language learners. Bristol provides over 100 career and transfer programs, plus flexible online courses that can result in an associate degree, a career-ready certificate or transfer pathways. The institution additionally offers Dual Enrollment and Early College programs, English language instruction and Adult Basic Education to assist learners at every stage.

The Economic and Workforce Solutions division at Bristol leads the region in workforce development, delivering tailored training for businesses and community members. The National Offshore Wind Institute at the college conducts training in a cutting-edge facility, providing internationally recognized instruction and certifications for offshore and onshore wind energy, maritime industries, first responders and related areas. Integrating SkillsUSA into these specialized programs means students training for careers in wind energy, maritime industries and emergency response will also have opportunities to compete at state and national levels, building networks that extend beyond the South Coast.

As one of the largest employers in the region, Bristol prioritizes student success through comprehensive support services and career advancement opportunities that reduce barriers to educational access. Bristol strives to maintain an inclusive setting that mirrors a broad mix of beliefs, cultures, languages, abilities and lifestyles.

By embedding SkillsUSA’s framework across these offerings, Bristol aims to ensure that students in fields ranging from offshore wind to healthcare to advanced manufacturing graduate with demonstrated competencies rather than just credits — a shift that could reshape how community colleges in Massachusetts measure success.
