Brooklyn Pudwill records over 200 kills in WDA volleyball season

Brooklyn Pudwill and the Legacy Volleyball Postseason Push

With the postseason looming, Legacy High School volleyball standout Brooklyn Pudwill has solidified her status as a primary offensive force in the Western Dakota Association. KFYR reported that the senior outside hitter has surged past the 200-kill mark this season, a statistical milestone that places her second among all hitters in the WDA. As teams refine their scouting reports for the final stretch of the year, Pudwill remains the focal point for opponents looking to neutralize the Legacy attack.

The path to this level of production was not immediate. According to Legacy head coach Courtney Huck, Pudwill’s current success is the culmination of a four-year development cycle within the program. While she has long possessed the raw power to deliver high-velocity swings, her transition into a consistent starter during her junior year marked a turning point in her high school career.

Refining the Mental Game

Pudwill attributes much of her recent effectiveness to a shift in her psychological approach to the sport. While she admits that her freshman and sophomore seasons were hampered by a lack of confidence in her own decision-making and skill set, she credits the coaching staff at Legacy for fostering a more aggressive mentality on the court.

Sports Spotlight: Brooklyn Pudwill

I think it’s really my confidence, honestly. It’s my mental game. Going into my freshman and sophomore year, I wasn’t as confident and didn’t think I had the skill or the mindset. But Kess Head Coach Courtney Huck and all the coaches really pushed me and fueled me up with confidence to swing on the court and have my aggressiveness.

This increased aggression has been paired with a tactical evolution. Coaches have noted that Pudwill is no longer reliant solely on power, having successfully integrated off-speed shots into her repertoire. This versatility has forced opposing defenses to account for a wider variety of attacking angles, making her a more difficult player to read at the net.

The Pressure of Being a Focal Point

Being the primary target of an opposing team’s defense can be a heavy burden for a high school athlete, but Coach Huck encourages her players to view that attention as a measure of their impact. I told her pressure is a privilege, Huck said. When these people are picking you out on the court because they know you are our heavy hand, that’s something you should hold close to your heart.

The impact of this mindset is evidenced by Pudwill’s all-state and all-region selections. Beyond her contributions in the front row, her defensive versatility has drawn interest from collegiate programs. She has already finalized her plans for the next level, committing to Iowa Central Community College. There, she intends to expand her athletic focus by competing in both indoor and beach volleyball.

Pudwill noted that her summer experience with beach volleyball provided a different perspective on competition, one that she found particularly engaging. As she prepares for the transition to the collegiate level, her immediate focus remains on the final postseason run with her teammates at Legacy. The outcome of these upcoming matches will determine the final chapter of a high school career defined by steady improvement and a newfound commitment to the mental side of the game.
