More than 2,000 Burgos households receive rice assistance through LGSF
Over 2,000 households in Burgos, La Union, have received a total of 40 kilograms of rice each as part of a national government initiative to bolster food security. The Philippine Information Agency reported that the municipality recently completed the fourth and final distribution round of the program, which utilized the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) to assist vulnerable families.
The distribution was structured to provide consistent relief over a four-month period. Each qualified household received 10 kilograms of rice per round, ensuring a steady supply of a primary food staple. This assistance reached all 12 barangays within the municipality, aiming to reduce household food expenses and allow residents to redirect their limited income toward other daily necessities.
Eligibility and funding for the rice program
Mayor Delfin Comedis Jr. emphasized that the selection process for the aid was strictly merit-based. According to the mayor, the local government ensured that the distribution was based solely on eligibility, regardless of political affiliation.
“Eligibility is the sole basis for receiving the aid, regardless of political affiliation,” Comedis said.
The funding for the initiative was provided by the national government, specifically through the Office of the President under Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. By channeling resources through the LGSF, the national government enables local government units (LGUs) to respond directly to the specific needs of their constituents and strengthen the delivery of basic services at the community level.
Precy Cornel, the barangay chairperson of Agpay, noted that the assistance successfully reached qualified families across the municipality. The program functions as part of a broader national effort to address food security concerns and provide a buffer for households facing rising living costs.
The LGSF Rice Assistance Program serves as a mechanism for the national government to support LGUs in delivering social assistance. This targeted approach is designed to mitigate the impact of economic pressures on the most vulnerable sectors of the population by ensuring that essential resources reach the community level efficiently.
