A 54-year-old man from Carencro died Monday evening following a two-vehicle collision on Louisiana Highway 98. The crash occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. on October 27, 2026, near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 343, according to a report from the Louisiana State Police.
Rear-end collision leads to fatal roadway exit
The sequence of events began with two vehicles traveling east on LA Hwy 98. A 1997 Dodge Ram was leading the way, with a 1998 Ford F-150 following behind. For reasons that investigators have not yet determined, the Ford F-150 struck the rear of the Dodge Ram.
The force of the impact sent the Ford crossing the centerline before it exited the roadway entirely. The Dodge Ram also left the pavement, ending up in a ditch along the highway. The driver of the Ford was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision; he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Dodge Ram was properly restrained and walked away with only minor injuries. While the Louisiana State Police do not suspect impairment played a role in the crash, they have obtained a routine toxicology sample for analysis to rule out any contributing substances.
The systemic risk of inattentive driving
While the specific trigger for this crash remains under investigation, the Louisiana State Police noted that distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a primary driver of roadway fatalities across the state.
The physics of this specific crash underscore the critical importance of the “seatbelt gap.” The driver of the Dodge, who was restrained, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Ford, who was unrestrained, did not survive.
The investigation into why the Ford F-150 failed to stop in time remains open.
