Casey Bloys Indicates HBO Max and Paramount+ More Likely to Bundle Than Combine

HBO streaming chief Casey Bloys indicated that HBO Max and Paramount+ could potentially be bundled as Warner Bros. Discovery moves toward its acquisition by Paramount Skydance, while addressing broader industry disruption at a conference in Los Angeles.

Casey Bloys Addresses the Paramount Skydance Acquisition and Streaming Future

As Warner Bros. Discovery moves closer to being acquired by Paramount Skydance Corp., leadership questions remain technically unsettled. Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles on Thursday, Casey Bloys, who oversees HBO’s programming and the HBO Max streaming service, declined to discuss his specific new role or confirm the exact leadership structure before the deal officially closes on October 6. He still has a year remaining on his WBD deal.

“Obviously there was news this week, and obviously there’s news across the board. I will say that the merger is not closed,” Bloys responded. “I believe that David (Ellison) and the team want to announce their leadership structure — it’s not mine to announce, so I don’t have any news for you to confirm.”

Bloys added that he believes Paramount CEO David Ellison and his team want to announce their leadership structure on their own timeline. The executive changes surrounding the transition already include the departure of Paramount’s Chair of Direct-to-Consumer, Cindy Holland, who announced her exit in a staff memo effective immediately. Holland noted in her departure notes that Ellison was optimizing for HBO stability as the companies enter their next chapter.

Why a Streaming Bundle Makes Sense Over a Full Platform Merger

Regarding the technical future of the platforms themselves, Bloys pushed back against the idea that HBO Max and Paramount+ would necessarily merge into one giant direct-to-consumer service. Instead, he pointed to existing industry precedents as a template for how the two apps might cooperate.

“I would point to the HBO Max-Disney bundle, which has been very successful,” Bloys said at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles on Thursday.

When asked directly whether viewers could expect a similar arrangement, Bloys answered that such a setup would make a lot of sense.

David Ellison and the Preservation of the HBO Brand

Bloys noted that he has spoken with David Ellison, who is currently the CEO of Paramount Skydance, alongside Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz, who has been named co-CEO. According to Bloys, Ellison has expressed deep respect for the prestige TV brand’s entire historical output.

“I’ve had conversations with David, and he is very, very excited, very respectful of what the HBO team has done — not just in my tenure — but the entire history of HBO, and he’s excited,” Bloys said.

Bloys expressed confidence that the incoming ownership group genuinely wants to maintain the operational standards that have defined HBO for decades, drawing on past transitions where new corporate stewards ultimately protected the network’s identity.

Industry Contraction and the Bursting of the Peak TV Bubble

Stepping back from corporate shuffling, Bloys addressed the broader economic realities facing television production. The Peak TV era, which once saw the industry greenlighting roughly 600 scripted series annually based purely on concepts, has given way to a severe contraction that has brought scripted output down closer to 400 shows.

Describing the human cost of that economic adjustment, Bloys called the reduction a catastrophe, noting that losing hundreds of shows eliminates thousands of good-paying jobs across the creative sector. Despite the ugly fallout of the bubble bursting, Bloys maintained an optimistic view on careers in entertainment, pointing out that disruption regularly clears the path for new players and eventual market calmness.
