Cheyenne begins restoration of historic Pumphouse following May fire

Legacy Construction Group begins roof replacement at Cheyenne Historic Pumphouse

Efforts to protect the 130-plus-year-old Cheyenne landmark are currently underway at the Historic Pumphouse following a fire in May. According to a city news release cited by wyomingnews.com, Legacy Construction Group workers have started putting a fresh roof onto the structure.

As part of the initiative, workers will also handle lead and asbestos removal, take down an addition that isn’t historic, build interior bearing walls to reinforce and safeguard the structure, and install a brand-new roof framework. The work is being completed through an emergency procurement process authorized by Municipal Code. This method enables the municipality to press ahead with essential fixes prior to winter, shielding the facility and setting it up for later restoration.

The Pumphouse sustained significant damage in a fire determined to be human-caused in May. The Cheyenne Police Department subsequently arrested a man in connection with the incident. Once structural experts inspected the site post-fire, they concluded that the facility could still be saved, creating a chance to safeguard this vital chapter of Cheyenne’s past.

Plans from the city anticipate that the Pumphouse will eventually house the Clean and Safe Division of the Community Recreation and Events Department, a group vital to the upkeep and stewardship of public areas across downtown Cheyenne. The roof replacement and associated stabilization work will cost just under $1.37 million. When this stage wraps up, municipal officials will draft a price projection for the remaining renovations and present it to City Council for review early next year.

Situated at 1504 Dillon Ave., the Historic Pumphouse can be seen from Ames Avenue and continues to serve as a key element of the industrial and architectural legacy of Cheyenne, according to the release.
