Cheyenne Pumphouse Begins Restoration After May Fire

Construction crews have begun installing a new roof on Cheyenne’s historic Pumphouse, the building significantly damaged in a May 2026 fire, Wyoming News Now reported.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the structure, but the building’s walls—constructed from locally sourced materials—remain standing strong more than a century after their original construction. With winter approaching, the roof replacement represents the only major repair needed to protect the landmark through the cold months ahead.

Replacing a Roof That Dated to the 1800s

Megan Stanfill, Executive Director of the Alliance for Historic Wyoming, told Wyoming News Now that the damaged roof held its own history as an original piece of the structure dating back to the 1800s. Stanfill acknowledged the loss, saying there is a little heartbreak in the new roof, but added that the Alliance hopes the replacement will honor the original.

“Built out of locally sourced materials and it’s still standing over 100 years later,” Stanfill said. “These buildings are so resilient and now all it needs is a new roof and it will be protected throughout the winter.”

$1.3 Million First Phase Includes Abatement and Stabilization

The current work extends beyond roofing. Crews are performing lead and asbestos abatement, removing a non-historic addition to the pumphouse, and building interior bearing walls to help stabilize the structure. The overall price tag for this first phase is estimated at $1.3 million, after which the remaining rehabilitation work will be priced out.

“The Alliance is super excited to see this first phase of stabilization and restoration work towards creating an actively used space in the pumphouse,” Stanfill said. “This is one of those really amazing steps, one of those full circle moments for us.”

Pumphouse to House Clean and Safe Division

Once the restoration is complete, the Pumphouse will become the future home of Cheyenne’s Community Recreation and Events Department’s Clean and Safe Division. The Alliance views the current stabilization as the critical first step toward returning the building to active public use.
