The Alpha of New Hampshire chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States, inducted 21 students from the Class of 2027 into its ranks on November 4. The ceremony, held at Collis Common Ground, maintains a Dartmouth tradition that stretches back to 1787.
Election to the society serves as a marker of academic achievement and character. During the meeting, Chapter President Andrew Samwick, who serves as the Sandra L. and Arthur L. Irving ’72a P’10 Professor of Economics, addressed the new members. “Your election is in recognition of your outstanding attainments in scholarly activities, and good moral character, quintessential qualifications for membership in a society emphasizing academic excellence and the pursuit of truth,” Samwick said.
Honorary and Alumni Inductions
The ceremony also recognized three individuals for their contributions beyond the undergraduate cohort. Deborah Hogan, the Thomas S. Kosasa Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Geisel School of Medicine, and Steve Rooks, a contemporary dancer, choreographer, and educator, were both elected as honorary members. Additionally, Roger Ulrich, an emeritus professor of classics, was inducted as an alumni member.
