David Benavidez Set for Massive Cruiserweight Unification Bout

Unified cruiserweight champion David Benavidez will defend his WBA and WBO titles against WBC champion Michal Cieslak on December 5 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Officials announced the three-title unification bout on Thursday, headlining a pay-per-view event on DAZN through Prime Video.

The matchup brings David Benavidez back to his home state for his first appearance there since May 2022, when he claimed the WBC super middleweight title against David Lemieux at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Now campaigning at cruiserweight, Benavidez carries an undefeated 32-0 record with 26 knockouts into the ring against Poland’s Cieslak.

How Noel Mikaelian’s Title Loss Cleared the Path for a Three-Belt Unification

The championship road to December 5 opened up due to the WBC’s decision to strip former titleholder Noel Mikaelian. Mikaelian bypassed a mandatory title defense against Benavidez to face WBA regular and lineal champion Jai Opetaia in a September bout under Zuffa Boxing, which Mikaelian lost via ninth-round TKO. That move left the WBC belt vacant of a mandatory defense, allowing Cieslak—who captured the interim title by stopping Jean Pascal in June 2025—to be elevated to full champion.

Cieslak brings a 28-2 record with 22 knockouts to the unification fight.

David Benavidez has been building his own legacy from the beginning. From when he became the youngest super middleweight world champion ever, to his time as light heavyweight king, and now as the unified cruiserweight champion. ‘The Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez hides from no one, and no one can stop him. David has always had my full support for his history-making career. This is his time.

Unified cruiserweight king David Benavidez is must-see entertainment every time he steps into the ring, and he’ll be highly-motivated to be at his best in front of his home state fans in Arizona as he looks to add another cruiserweight title to his collection against an experienced world champion in Michal Cieslak.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Keith Thurman Lead a Stacked Pay-Per-View Undercard

The co-main event features a 12-round middleweight contest between undefeated WBC interim super welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. and former unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman. Ortiz enters at 24-0 with 22 knockouts, having last fought in November when he stopped Erickson Lubin via a second-round TKO. Following that bout, Ortiz engaged in a legal dispute with promoter Golden Boy Promotions over missed opportunities before the two sides reached a settlement in July to fulfill his remaining contract.

Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs) is looking to recover from a sixth-round knockout loss to WBC super middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in March. The undercard also features rising junior welterweight Emiliano Vargas (18-0, 15 KOs), son of former two-time world champion Fernando Vargas, in a 10-round fight against a yet-to-be-named opponent. Nikita Tszyu, son of Kostya and younger brother of Tim Tszyu, will make his U.S. debut on the card, bringing a 12-0-1 record into his matchup.

Future Weight Class Plans and Promotional Environment Ahead of December

Beyond the December 5 card, Benavidez has made his long-term career trajectory clear. Having captured the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles by stopping Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez via a sixth-round TKO in May at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the three-division champion confirmed he will not return to light heavyweight despite still holding the WBC and WBA 175-pound titles. Instead, he has expressed interest in eventually moving up to heavyweight, alongside potential fights against WBA regular and lineal champion Jai Opetaia.

At the same time, Benavidez revealed that the unification bout against Cieslak will mark the final fight of his current promotional deal with Sampson Lewkowicz, with plans to evaluate a multi-fight agreement with a larger organization next.
