Democrat Sarah McMillen Unseats Pete Meitzner in Sedgwick County Election

Sarah McMillen Claims District 1 Seat in Sedgwick County Election

Sarah McMillen, a Kechi resident, successfully unseated incumbent Republican Pete Meitzner in Tuesday’s election, securing a position on the five-member Board of County Commissioners. KWCH reported that McMillen will serve as the lone Democrat on the board when she is sworn into office in January.

The election results mark a significant transition for the commission, ending a 15-year career in elected office for Meitzner. His tenure included seven years on the Wichita City Council representing District 2 and eight years on the Sedgwick County Commission representing District 1. Following the announcement of the results, McMillen attributed the victory to the labor-intensive nature of her campaign.

Sedgwick County Commission Election Results: McMillan wins District 1

We were very hopeful, but definitely the underdog walking in. A complete grassroot campaign, just really was a lot of knocking doors and trying to find people to talk to them and let them know about my platform and what I can do for them and also to hear what they’re concerns were.

Incumbents Retain Seats in District 4 and District 5

While District 1 saw a change in leadership, the remaining seats on the ballot resulted in victories for the incumbents. In District 5, Republican Jim Howell won re-election after defeating Libertarian challenger Olivia Hayse. Meanwhile, District 4 incumbent Republican Ryan Baty secured another term after running in an uncontested race.

McMillen, Howell, and Baty are scheduled to be sworn into office in January, at which point they will begin their respective terms. The board will continue its work managing county-level operations, with the composition of the commission shifting to include McMillen’s perspective as the board’s only Democrat.
