Kim Landry Defeats Incumbent Jason Verdigets for Judge Seat

In a shift that reshapes the bench of the 23rd Judicial District Court, challenger Kim Landry has unseated incumbent Judge Jason Verdigets. The results of the November 3 election, as reported by WAFB, bring an end to a 12-year tenure for Verdigets, who first assumed the role on January 1, 2015, following his election in 2014.

The margins were thin, reflecting a localized tug-of-war across the three-parish district. Landry secured a total of 22,867 votes, capturing 51.6% of the electorate, while Verdigets finished with 21,470 votes, or 48.4%. While Verdigets held a 450-vote advantage in Assumption Parish, it proved insufficient to offset Landry’s performance in Ascension and St. James parishes.

The Geography of the Vote

The path to Landry’s victory was paved by her success in the district’s more populous areas. In Ascension Parish, which served as a primary battleground, Landry pulled in 53% of the vote—17,312 ballots compared to the incumbent’s 15,582. The contest in St. James Parish was even tighter, with Landry narrowly edging out Verdigets 3,169 to 3,052.

The following table outlines the breakdown of the unofficial results across the 103 precincts of the district:

Kim Landry Defeats Incumbent Jason Verdigets for Judge Seat
Parish Kim Landry (Votes) Jason Verdigets (Votes)
Ascension 17,312 15,582
St. James 3,169 3,052
Assumption 2,386 2,836

A Transition for the 23rd Judicial District

For the voters of Ascension, Assumption, and St. James parishes, the outcome signals a change in judicial leadership that will take effect when Landry officially assumes office in January 2027. Verdigets, a former felony prosecutor in the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, acknowledged the transition on November 4.

Congrats to Kim Landry. I wish her well in her new role. It’s a tough one and she like every judge will need all of our prayers and support. Was a disappointing night for me but the people have spoken and we move on.
