A broad-daylight abduction attempt on Honolulu’s Diamond Head Gold Coast was thwarted after neighborhood residents intervened and forced a suspect to flee, Hawaii News Now reported.
The incident unfolded around noon on a Monday outside the Kainalu condominium on Coconut Avenue. Surveillance footage captured a truck parked near the building before a man entered the garage, confronted two women, and targeted the younger individual.
The 77-year-old condo resident, who chose to remain anonymous, recalled the attacker shoving her out of the way. “He looked like a monster,” she told Hawaii News Now. “He just had so much hatred and craziness in his eyes.”
According to police, the suspect elbowed the older resident in the face and picked up her 24-year-old friend. Both women screamed for help as the younger resident fought back. The 77-year-old resident said she prayed that people would hear them during the struggle.
Neighbors Intervene as the Abduction Unfolds
Witnesses in the neighborhood quickly responded to the commotion. Beverly Louis heard the screams and saw the man bear-hugging the victim and dragging her toward the back of his truck.

“I just started screaming, ‘Drop her! Drop her! Drop her!’” Louis said. “She was screaming for her life. She was terrified.”
Another neighbor, Mike Finkelstein, shouted at the man to let the woman go while notifying law enforcement that he was pursuing the suspect. As several residents converged on the location, the 24-year-old victim managed to break free.
The suspect returned to his truck and fled the scene in reverse, traveling mauka on Coconut Avenue.
Arrest Made Hours Later
Approximately three hours after the incident, police located a suspicious man matching the suspect’s description running naked on 22nd Avenue and Diamond Head Road. Officers arrested him on charges of kidnapping and second-degree assault.
While the suspect is in custody, the 77-year-old resident reported that both she and her friend continue to experience nightmares, leaving the neighborhood on edge following the daytime attack.
